As a mark of appreciation of the hospitality extended to the West Coast farmers’ touring party, last month, Mr G. F. Moore, owner of the Bushy Park estate,. Wanganui, has been elected the first life member, of the West Coast Province of the New Zealand Farmers' Union.

For the nine vacancies in the new Civil Reserve of pilots, on the West Coast, thirty-six applications have been received by the West Coast United Aero Club, including 21 from the Grey district, nine from Hokitika, four from Westport and two from Inangahua. The selection committee of the club will meet shortly and will forward its recommendations to the Air Department, who will choose the ‘nine for the training, which, embraces ■a course of forty hours’ flying, ’ and two refresher courses of. 10 hours each.

A misadventure that might well have had a fatal result, added thrills to a parachute jump made by Sellars at the Canterbury Aero Club’s Field Day, held at Wigram. Sellars had stepped out on to the wing ready to make the jump, when to his horror, he saw that the pilot chute, which draws out the main parachute, was issuing from the pack and streaming behind in a siip stream. Realising the danger of the parachute becoming tangled in the tail of the aeroplane, Sellars quickly jumped, and was fortunate enough to fall clear and descend safely.—Press Assn.

The Dominion President of the Farmers’ Union. (Mr W. W. Mulholland) is to visit the West Coast at the beginning of next month.. He will arrive on Monday, July 5, and that evening will address a meeting _ of ■the southern branches, at Kokatahi. to be followed by a,, social function. The following evening, he will be the gu<est of the Ngahere and Grey Valiev branches, at Aliaura, and will give aii address. A social will, also be held, at which members of the Inangahua, Rotomanu and Grey branches will be guests. On Wednesday he will proceed to 'Westport and will leave Greymouth by the express on Thursday, July 9, on return to Christchurch.

■ Twelve months to the day it last commenced, the local sitting of the 'full bench of the Arbitration Court will sit at Auckland on August 18, to deal witli an accumulation of cases in tlics northern industrial district. The news was received to-day with a measure of jubilation in union circles, as a number of industrial organisations have, since the introduction oi the new Government legislation, been operating without awards and agreements. The Auckland session will be presided over, for the first time, by the Acting-President of the Court (Mr Justice O’Regan). It is expected that the Court will bo occupied in Auckland for two or three months. — Press Assn.

The report presented at the annua meeting of the Bay of Island Swoid fish and Make Shark Club revealed a record season. Despite a 8® ° d e of unsatisfactory weather, fish caught were 463 consisting ot 23 Wack marlin, 319 striped marlin. 102 rnano sharks,, seven hammerhead shprks three thresher sharks, and lo of o.thei varieties. No Taranaki resident has not heard the quip regarding the provincial Rugby and cows, but they were given a novel linking up by Mr. J. S. Hickey (Opunake) at a management committee meeting of the Taranaki Rugby. Union at Stratford (reports the ‘Herald”). On his suggestion the New Zealand Union was recommended to start test matches with, the Springboks at 2.30 p.m. instead.of 3 p.m. so that the dairy farmers would be able to listen to the broadcasts without having to leave radio sets for cow sheds before the matches were finished.

During the* year the Nelson Education Board amended the conditions governing the award .of, environment certificates stated tlie /annual report of the board. It was decided to present a. championship shield to the school whose total environment, inside and outside, was considered, to be the best in the Nelson Education District, apd three grades of certificates—first, second, and third class. At the end of the year the following schools were granted/certificates: First class, 6; second class, 18; and third, class, 30. The championship shield, to be :.held for the year ending December; 1937, was awarded to the RiwakaSchool.

In reply to his representations drawing attention to the need for the replacement’of the Kaiata. Public School building, Mr. J. O’Brien, M.P., has received advice from the. Minister of Education (Hon. P. Fraser) that he agrees with the suggestion, and that the matter of the replacement of the building is being taken up with'the Canterbury Education Board. Pointing • out that the last Appropriations did not provide for a major expenditure on the work, the Acting Minister of Public Works (Hon. P. C. Webb) has advised Mr. J. O’Brien. M.P., that his request for consideration of an immediate commencement of construction work upon the Cobden to Point Elizabeth Road, to employ workmen who have homes in Greymouth, must, be deferred for consideration during the preparation of the next Public Works Estimates.
