NELSON EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] NELSON, June 21. The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board was held to-day, all members being present. Accounts amounting to £9,672 were passed for payment. The Chairman stated that it was with the greatest regret that he referred to the sudden death of the Senior Inspector at Motuleka recently. He moved that, the Board tender to Mrs Watson and family their deepest sympathy in the loss they had sustained. The motion was then carried, the members standing. The. sub-committeo of the Board reported on suggestions for the erection of'a central school on a new site at. Denniston. The question of consolidation was held over pending further investigations. The secretary reported on the negotiations made for the purchase of the Granity Domain for a new school site, and which was an excellent site ideally situated, grassed, drained and levelled with an area, of four acres. The chairman suggested that the Minister be approched for the Board to enter into negotiations for the purchase of lhe area. He was appointed to interview the Minister.

The sub-committee reported on the suggestion of lhe rebuilding of a new school on a. new site. It was decided to approach the Westport Borough Council offering a portion of the present school site for another. The Headmaster, Ikamatua School, wrote advising the Board of the splendid attendance of a pupil named Joseph Fitzgerald, who had attended for the past six years with an unbroken record. Unfortunately, he had lately been Unable to continue, owing to sickness. The distance ho had to walk was two and a half miles each way. It was decided to send the lad a letter of appreciation, together with a. copy of The Coronation Book, recently published. The appointments made by the executive committee, were confirmed, viz.. A. F. Ellis, secondary assistant master, Reef ton. Sole Teachers: Mr W. J. Rogers, Inangahua. Landing. Miss IT. Hopkins, Pigeon Valley. Miss' 11. C. Sexton, Punakaiki. Mr A. F. Lewis. Tarakohe. Mr G. C. Watkins was transferred from Brightwater to Wakefield.
