ATTEMPT TO BRIBE
BETTING SLIP REQUEST. LONDON, May 9. For attempting to bribe P.c. Tozer, of the City police, Thomas Allum, of Lollard Street, Kensington, was lined £5 at the Mansion House yesterday. Jack Williams, newsvender, of Wakefield Street, East Ham, was fined £5 for aiding and abetting Allum. It was stated that Williams was lined £lO at the Mansion House in April for street bookmaking. Afterwards he asked P.c. Tozer, who had arrested him. if he could get a copy of tim. betting slips which the magistrate had ordered Io be destroyed as ho wished to pay out his winning clients. Ho told tho officer that if he went to Temple Lane later in the day ho would give him a drink for his trouble. 'Tozer reported the matter and, acting under instructions went to Temple Lane, v.lime ho saw Allum, who asked him if ho had tho slips. 'Tozer said it. was most irregular, and Allum replied: "That is all right,’’ and gave him a £1 note.
Mr. Laurence Vine, defending, described the trap set for the two num as most "un-English.”
