Mrs J. Knotts, and Miss L. Knotts, who have been visiting Mr and Mrs W. Greenhill, left to-day on> return to Christchurch.

Mr. J. H. Gilbert, General Traffic Manager of the Union Steam Ship Co. Ltd., Wellington, is visiting Greymouth. and will proceed to Westport later this week.

A Sydney cablegram announced the death of Lieutenant Colonel Henry Goldfinch, who was for ,48 years a Salvation Army officer, entering the service from Feilding, New;'. Zealand.

A Sydney cablegram stated’ that the Springbok. Dutoit. who was injured in Saturday’s match, has broken two small bones in the lower spine, and will be unable to play for the remainder of the tour.

Hon R. Semple, Minister for Public Works, after a week in hospital, attended at his office for a brief period yesterday to sign urgent papers. Mr Semple said that a medical examination disclosed that he was organically sound and that his indisposition had been due to strain and overwork.

A London cablegram stated it is believed that Sir James Barrie left an estate of £300,000, the largest sum left by any British author. The executors include the New Zealand Victoria Cross holder, Major-General B. C. Freyberg.

A London cablegram stated that Mr. Savage spent yesterday afternoon at Broadcasting House. His Majesty received him in the evening, when he made a farewell call. Mr. Savage will meet Mr. Malcolm MacDonald today to discuss matters arising from lhe Conference. He 'will go to Oxford, on Wednesday, to receive the degree of Doctor of Civil Law.

In view of her early departure for Wellington, where she will reside. Miss Doreen (Rene) Hanrahan was entertained at Perotti Hall last evening by a large number of friends and presented with a cheque. In making the presentation, Mr. J. O’Brien M.P., referred to Miss Hanrahan’s popularity and the regre(; of her friends that she was leaving Greymouth. Mr. J. Coyle responded on behalf of Miss Hanrahan. Items were given by Miss Doreen Donovan and Mr. G. Hughes and competitions were won by Mrs. R. Cooper, Mrs. W. Donovan, Miss F. Smith and Mr. Davidson. Music for dancing was supplied by Miss Nancy Harrie, Messrs J. Williams and E. Carruthers.

Mr W. Fuller, Officer-in-Charge, Railway Goodsheds, Greymouth, who will leave to-morrow, for Dunedin, on transfer as Traffic Inspector, was met to-day, by Railways Officers, and presented with a chiming clock, suitably inscribed. The presentation was made by the Stationmaster, Mr C. A. Legg, who referred to Mt Fuller’s efficiency as an officer of the Department, congratulated. him on his promotion and wished him the best of health and success. Other speakers, who added their congratulations and good wishes were Messrs P. J. Raleigh, A. N. Gilmore, N. Traves, and H. Taylor. Mr. Fuller was also met by representatives of Greymouth businessmen last evening, and presented with a log box and a fireside kerb, in appreciation of his services. The presentation was made by Mr. J. W. Greenslade, who, on behalf of the business men, expressed appreciation of Mr. Fuller’s tact and courtesy, and his efficient service, and added that his departure was regretted. Mr. B. Cox also spoke.
