HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING.

t HOKITIKA, June 11. The monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor; Mr G. A. Perry. Crs. A. R. Elcock, A. H. Thompson, E. Teichelmann, E. L. Park, and G. Heinz. Apologies were received from Crs.'H. T. Parry, T. W. Duff, and H. L. Michel. The financial statement, showed receipts £360/6/5, expenditure £B5l 0/9. Accounts amounting to £678 were passed for payment. Water supply account £56/8/10 paid was approved. Abattoirs report: Stock? slaughtered for month of May were: 58 cows, 25 heifers. IS calves, 57 bullocks, 246 sheep, 100 lambs, 23 pigs. Condemned, 2 cows, 1 bullock, 2 sheep, 1 pig. Fees collected for month totalled £B4/8/6. Fees for the corresponding month last year £73/3/-. The Secretary of the New Zealand Workers’ Union wrote, expresisng thanks and appreciation for use of Town Hall for the purpose of their meetings. The Sanitary Inspector, Greymouth, reported on work performed in the district for the period May 1 to 31. The New Zealand Refrigerating Co. Ltd., advised that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the period May 1 to May 31, viz.: 38. sheep, 2 lambs. The District Employment Officer, Greymouth, wrote asking whether the Council could provide work other than maintenance, for intermittent workers (waterside workers). —Town Clerk to reply. The -Kanieri-Hokitika Sawmills, Ltd., applied for domestic water supply to section 1057, Livingstone Street, that growth be cleared from frontage, and that the depression between the section boundary and the road be filled to allow a 12ft. wide cart-way to the section. —Approved. The Secretary, Hokitika Golf Club, wrote supporting the request of the Automobile Association for turn-outs on the Hokitika railway bridge, and advising that he had communicated with the District Engineer for Main Highways, and enclosing a reply from that officer to the effect that if the Westland County Cjouncil and the Hokitika Borough Council combined to financially assist the Government the matter would be considered as a Public Works item.—The Public Works engineer to be asked for an estimate of the cost.

The Inspector of Explosives, Wellington, advised that the Department of Industries and Commerce had advised that permission had been granted to Messrs Ross and Burt to instal an additional petrol pump at their garage on the condition that applicants comply with the provisions of the Explosive and Dangerous Goods Amendment Act, 1920.

The Secretary, Hokitika Fire Board, advised that -the Council’s levy for fire prevention for the. year commencing on April 1. 1937, is £290/5/-, payable in quarterly instalments of £73/16/3, on the first days of May, August, and November, 1937, and February 1938.—Approved. A. R. Elcock, agent for John Whitten Haile, applied to sub-divide section 3320. Weld Street.—Granted. Airs S. Payne applied for road access to section 1292 on the west side of Hoffman Street and north of Hampden Street.—Approved.

H. Staines, Gibson’s Quay, wrote, asking for the Council’s assistance in regard to his drainage.—Overseer to report. The contractor for Keller’s Hotel applied for permission to erect scaffolding.—Granted, subject to usual conditions.

Air Jamieson. Davie Street, applied, for drainage.—Nothing to be done until titles are clear.

It was decided to enrol the Council with the Canterbury Employers' Association.

The tender of Airs A. B. Coyle for gravel was accepted. It was decided to offer Whitcombe Square to the Government Housing Department for nothing, providing the Department road and' drain the area. The foreman’s reports were read and approved. Regarding the cleaning of Revell Street twice instead of once a week, as requested by the Hokitika Businessmen’s Association, it was decided to carry on twice weekly, in the meantime. It was considered the streets were as well lit as required. It was decided the lights going all night were really necessary and would be continued.

The Treasurer reported that the balance of the loan amounting to £6OO Ohad been raised. Tenders for drilling saddle pieces for the new reticulation scheme were opened. The tender of _G. and D. Davidson, Ltd., of Hokitika, was accepted. In connection with the provision of an electric hoist for the Abattoirs, it was decided to refer same to a subcommittee of the Mayor, Town Clerk and Cr. Barry, with power to act. It was decided to reduce the Council’s charge of 10 per cent, of the net takings on Cass Square to 5 per cent.
