TO-DAY'S RACING NEWS

Galloping • MEETINGS to come June 9, i.2—Auckland. June 9: Wanganui. June 9, 10, 12-r Dunedin. June 9, 12 —Napier Park. June 17, 19—Hawke’s Bay. June 19—Greymouth. June 19—-Opotiki. June 26 —Ashburton County. June 30—Dannevirke Hunt. Auckland Weatlier: The “Star’s” Auckland correspondent telegraphed to-day. that > the weather in the northern city is fine, but that the forecast for to-morrow is not promising.

Grey Nominations: The nominations for the Greymouth Jockey Club’s Winter meeting (June 19), which were to have closed last evening, will ribw close on Thursday next at 8 p.m.. with the secretary, Mr M. J. Fogarty, Greymouth.

All Irish: All Irish, a winner at Ellerslie, on Saturday, is a six-year-old gelding by Illumination from Kiki by Winkie Kilrea, by Kilbroney—Araite-Uru, by Birkenhead, and so has the pedigree of a possibly good horse.

Northern Steeples Riders: Riding engagements for the Great Northern Steeplechase include: Royal Limond, R. Beale; Billy Boy, C. Thomson; Erination, J. Muir; Valpeen, R. E. Thomson; Don Erma, A. Gilmer; Allegretto, J. McLaughlin; Pahu, G. Ridgway; High Quality, C. Walters; Black Marlin, F. E, Baker; Irish Comet. N. Watson; F. Fergus; St. Musk, T. Williams; Free Air, M, Kearns; Boklaw, R. Jones; London, J. Day.

Made Amends: The success gained by the Awapuni horseman C. Thomson, in riding Sandy Dix to victory in the Great Northern Hurdles on Saturday, would !be some recompense to him for his ill-luck in being dislodged from Clarion Call, who was several lengths clear of the whole field when he fell at the last fence in last -year’s race, Thomson making a gallant but ineffectual attempt to regain control of his horse.

Sandy Dix: The Great Northern Hurdles winner Sandy Dix is trained at Te Rapa (Hamilton) by T. M. Morriss. He is an aged gelding by Sandstar (sire oi Taitoru and One Whetu) from Miss Dix <a mare by Phoebus Apollo from Alydos) who was 24 years old when she produced the Great Northern winner to be. Sandy Dix won a hurdle race at the Avondale meeting a few weeks ago, but his form on his home course last month was not impressive enough to bring him into more than local favour for the big race at Auckland. Two More Sires:

Another Son-in-Law horse has been purchased for the Dominion, Mr. A. F. Symes having secured Junior Consul, which will thus join several other well-bred sires in the Hawke’s Bay district. Mr. Symes was in the running for his son-in-law, Mr. W.. R. Stead, when Beau Pere, another Son-in-Law horse, was sold at Mr. J. Donald’s dispersal sale last January. The Tetrateriia horse Theio has also been bought for a Hawke’s Bay stud, Mr. F. Donnelly having made the purchase.

An Ellerslie Winner: Collision, a winner over the battens at Ellerslie on Saturday, is by Colossus from Arbroath, by Aberbrothock from Sanguinary, by Sylvia Park from Sanguine, by Apremont from Last Chance, by The Painter, tracing to the pure Arab .tap-root Finesse, by Tros. Both Apremont and The Painter were great sires of jumpers in the early days. Aberbrothock was the reputed sire of Rangiata, dam of Aurora Borealis, and the female line has produced the Great Northern Steeples winner, Mocassin. Collision is a half-brother to Hunting Star, who won. the last race at the Te Rapa meeting.

Small Boy: Small Boy, who ran second at the Auckland meeting on Saturday, following a win at Te Rapa, is owned in Gisborne. He was bred by Mr F. 0. Bruce in 1932, and is by Psychology, whose get seem to improve _with age, from Susan Leunox by Kilboy from Shona May by Treadmill from Edna May by Multiform from Helen Faucit by Castor from Cissy by Musket from the great Frailty (18) by Goldsbrough. Frailty’s sons were much better than her daughters, and her branch of the Flora Mclvor family is not much represented nowadays. Kilboy was a splendid racehorse and a great stayer, but was singularly unsuccessful as a sire. Some of his brood mares, however, have made good, among them being the dams of Walton Park, Makeup, Tigerism and Con Fuoco.

Be Friend: . . . De Friend who raced surprisingly well in the Cornwall Handicap, was bred in 1932, and is by Defoe from Jeanette, and a hall-brother to Uuexpected, <t son ot Malopert. who as as got when his sire was a two-year-old. ns the result of a chance service. An .incident very uncommon among gallopers took place at the Tolaga Buy meeting in February lasi, when i’athei and son raced against, one another in the same race. Jeanette, dam of. De Friend, was bred by Mr Ernest Alison in 1922, and is by Romeo from Dixieland by Berriedale from Georgia by Bobadil from Carolina (10), a halfsister Trenton to Gossip, who founded a splendid staying line for Nir T. H. Lowry, Berriedale was by Wallace from Elsie ((>) the only daughter of St. Simon over sent out to the colonies, and ancestress ot Redshank, Red Streak and Red Manfred. Romeo is rapidly coming to the loro a« a brood mare sire, and Ins daughter are sure to be much sought after One of them is Lady Mam. dam of Gay Sheila, Gay Blonde and Gay Sheik, who now has a nice lilly loal by imported Foxbridge.

Hunting Song Ahead: Recent successes have now put Hunting Song definitely at the head of the winning sires tor the and at this stage it looks as though there is very little chance of his being cisplaced. The leading sires up to the end Of the Waikato meeting read as follows:— Hunting Song, by Hurry On Cl 3 1302: Chief Ruler, by The I etrarch. £12,35GJ; Acre, by Linacre. £11,137’; Paper Money, by Greenback £10.868; Lord Quex. by Lem berg’ £60982; Balboa, by Varco, £60201: Colossus, by Polymelus,

£5516; Musketoon, by Stedfast .£5351 J; Lackham, by Roi. Herode, £5213; Raceful. by Martian, £48071; Siegfried, by Son-in-Law, £47951; Limond, by Desmond, £47271; Robespierre, by Phalaris, £44041; Valkyrian, by William the Third, £42GS; Psychology, by Tracery, £41561; Lord Warden, by Hurry On, £4145; Winning Hit, by Autumnus, £4062£; Nigger Mihstrel, by All Black, £4062. Acre, third on the list, was bred in Australia, while New Zealand-bred sires represented are Balboa, Raceful, Winning Hit and Nigger Minstrel. Three out of the six leading sires, Hunting Song, Acre and Balboa, descend from the male line of West Australian, a remarkable record. The male line of St. Simon is well represented with five sires in the list. The Galopin horses represented are Paper Money (always high up), Musketoon, Limond, Valkyrian and Winning Hit. The Bend Or family has Lord Quex, Colossus, Racest(l alwl Robespierre. The Herod lino is represented by Chief Ruler and Lackham.

THE DERBY WINNER

ROMANCE OF FAMOUS SIRE

Solario was a noteworthy figure on the English turf before he won the St. Leger of 1925. and he had already proved himself as a great sire before he became the subject ot the most sensational bidding for a stallion that has been seen round a public sale ring. That was in July. 1932. when, on account, of the death of his owner, Sir John Rutherford, he came under the hammer, together with other horses of his stable and stud. This year will be his most notable one to date, for already he lias been represented by the winner of the One Thousand Guineas and of the Derby, Exhibitionist and M'd-day Sun respectively. Last year, he was second on the list of winning sires to Fairway, his progeny winning 32 races worth £29,336* He belongs to the Bruce Lowe No. 26 family, which has produced no other sires of note apart from Bill of Portland, whose blood is largely represented in New Zealand and Roseworthy, who gained distinction in Australia.

FIRST SOLD FOR 3500 GUINEAS.

Bred in 1922 by the late Lord Dunraven at Limerick. Solario was bought as a yearling by Sir John Rutherfoid for 3500 guineas, the. representative of the Aga Khan being the under-bidder at 3000 guineas. He won the Exeter Stakes as a two-year-old, the Ascot Derby. Princess of Wales Stakes and St. Leger at three years, and the Coronation Cup and Ascot Gold Cup as a four-year-old. He raced 12 times and the six victories mentioned were worth £20,935, so he was a great bargain as a. racer. His owner refused a firm offer of £75.000 for him after he won the Coronation Cup. When the day came for him to he sold, after life had been' employed .in stud duty by his late owner since 1927, the result of the sale was eagerly awaited by racing people throughout the world, for it. was nearly 50 years since a. tried stallion of Solario’s class and reputation had been offered at auction.

Bidding started at 25,000 guineas, and soon it was evident that Lord Glanely’s syndicate, formed of wealthy turf enthusiasts with the object of keeping the horse in the country, would have its purse-stri” " extended to achieve its object. FAMOUS RINGSIDE DUEL. There were only four bidders, but three of them represented syndicates with powerful financial backing. Mr. Frank B. Hills, an American, came into the picture by offering 36,500 guineas and Lord Glanely responded with 37,000 guineas. The two thereafter had the field to themselves and the horse was knocked down to Lord Glanely at. 47.000 guineas, the highest price ever secured by a sire in such ! circumstances. It. later became known that Lord Glanely’s party fixed its limit at 40,000 guineas, but when the extent of the opposition was sensed, he and Lord Rosebery determined to go to 50,000 guineas, if necessary.

Many racing folk inclined to the opinion that at 47,000 guineas, Solario had been well sold. His dam. Sun Worship, covered by Legatee, had been sold two years earlier for 45 guineas. Yet, to the end of last year, to which period only the complete results are available, Solario had sired the winners of 162| races, worth £126,6701. Thus, the courage and patriotism of the Solario syndicate, whose members have prior claim to his services for their mares, have been very fully rewarded.

Trotting MEETINGS TO COME Juno 9. —Ashburton. June 19, 23.—Auckland. I Unlikely Starter: Gold Tinge is reported from Christchurch, to be an unlikely starter at Ashburton, to-morrow. Bracketed Horses: Ju the King George Handicap, to be run at Ashburton to-morrow, Grace McElwyn and Lucky Jack, trained by R. B. Berry; Pot Luck and Worthy Light, in M. Holmes’s stable; and Tempest and Cloudy Range, in F. C. Dunlevy’s charge, will be bracketed on the totalisator. A Yaldhurst Pair: M. B. Edwards will proifuce two pacers for the Sapling Stakes in Two’s Loose and Francisco. M. Stewart, who in reei nt years has done a lot of driving for the Yaldhurst stable, has accepted an appointment in Auckland and J. Bryce, jun., will drive Francisco. Edwards will be behind Two’s Loose, with which he won the Timaru Nursery St tikes.

Encounter: The Man-o’-War mare. Encounter, trained by M. C. McTigue at Met liven, ran second to Reporter at her last start (at. Ashburton), over a mile and a half, and placed 3.2i> 4-5 against her name. The mare was unlucky to strike Reporter at his top, and slit* will have many friends when she parades for the Winter Handicap til Ashburton to-morrow. Consistent: 'Pho Don Pronto pacer, Lucky Love, has been eight times placed this season in Auckland province, for £l2O. bin in each instance he returned useful dividends. Lucky Love has started 15 times and on four other occasions he has finished a close fourth. Ho competed at eight meetings, and excepting in February, when he was twice fourth, he has returned a place dividend at every meeting.

Working Satisfactorily: 'Die Croat Bingen gelding. Handicapper. has taken no harm from his recent, racing, and is hitting out with I plenty of freedom in his work at Kpscin. Handicapper has built up a fairly record since coming from the

south, and altliqugli ho failed in both his outings at Claudelands last month, there was some excuse for the defeats, as he hit himself badly going across the top bend each time. "Handicapper is bn a handy mark at present, and he may be worth remembering when, he next sports silk.

Trotting Freely: Young Rodney has not been overtaxed of late, But the bay trotter is fairly revelling in the ta;sks allotted him, and is trotting in fine style. This gelding registered some very sound performances last year, but has now worked himself back to a fairly tight mark, from which he is set a. difficult proposition to win. However, one thing in the Nelson Bingen gelding’s favour is that he is solid, and thus has always to be treated with respect. Young Rodney will probably be seen out at the forthcoming Auckland Winter meeting, and the bay trotter is not without prospects.

Great Author: Ono of Author Dillon’s best sons in Great Author, has become the property of a client of L. Davidson’s stable. Great Author has won several races, including the Westport Cup, under J. J. Jarden, and blit for unsoundness he would have added to his creditable list of winnings. Great Author has been given sufficient work by Davidson to show that he is not a back-number, but it has been considered advisable to cease training the gelding pending treatment of his front legs. Davidson is confident that Great. Author will stand a preparation, nnd he is looking forward to him winning a stake or two next season.

Ashburton Trotting Club: Very little rain had fallen at Ashburton yesterday, and the course is reported to be in first-class winter condition. The Auckland horses. Sandusky and Nervie’s Last, were taken straight through-from the steamer express to Ashburton, and yesterday morning were given fast work on the course proper. Both horses appear to be in excellent order, and their recent racing will give them an advantage over the majority of Canterbury horses. Sandusky impressed tTie few’ trackwatchers by a solid display of pacing and he is rapidly coming into favour for the Sapling Stakes. He is now an equal favourite with Horse Power for the two-year-old classic.

Bred to Win:

Mountain Dell, 4.19 3-5, champion staying mare, is in foal to Jewel Pointer. The progeny of two such great pacers should be able to get over the ground. Mountain Dell was got by Blue Mountain King from Whispering Dell, by Brown Pearl from! Murmur’s Daughter. Brown Pearl was got. by Jewel Chimes, a son of Abbey Bells and Jewell’s Heiress. Jewel Pointer was got by Logan Pointer from Law Chimes, by Abbey Bells from Jewel Heiress. Blue Mountain King was got by Ribbonwood— Donnesse, by Don Cleve —Lazy, by Era —Miss Harold, by Chick Harold—Nellie, by Fusilier, a son of Musket and Yatterina, the dam of Libeller (Great Northern Derby), Rosarina (ancestress of Wairiki, Auckland Cup), Matchlock (AJ.C. Leger, V.R.C. St. Leger), and Pinfire (an Auckland Cup winner).

Sandusky’s Lines: /Xn interesting candidate tor tne Sapling Stakes to-morrow, and onej who will be one of the first favourites] is the Auckland-owned Sandusky, prepared by that most success! ul mentor F. J. Smith. Sandusky, who is | named’afteu 'jbe capital of Enel County. Ohio, has all the requisite I credentials in the matter of blood lines to make a champion. His sire., jewel Pointer (4.22 1-5) is by Logan] Pointer from Law ('himes. a mare that ] raced successfully many years ago. She was bv Abbey Bells (nnp.)| from Jewel Heiress, and was bred at ] the Allcr'lale Stud', Melbourne. Marie , Maddison. one of the mares im|H»rt<•<! ] hy Mr E. X. Lelievre, of Akaroa. Breeding such as this can hardlv tail to produce speed, for it is outstanding on both sides. Jewel Pointer has a" iwo-mile record of 4.22 l-;>, wbib Gieat Bingen, sire of Bonnie Bingen, went 4.19 2-5.

N. 7.. SAPLING STAKES. ASHBURTON’ PROS P EFTS. [special to “stai:.”] CHRISTCHURCH, June S. The New Zealand Sapling Stakes, tlie leading classic race in the Southern Hemisphere, will be the main attraction at the Ashburton Trotting Clul’s meeting to-morrow. At one time there appeared a grave doubt as to whether the two-year-old classic

would ever be a success,, but in the face of small fields and not very solid public support the club continued to increase the stake until to-day it carries a fine prize of £l,lOO. This race provides the true test of merit of the two-year-olds, and the winner is rightly acclaimed the champion of the year. Last year 16 horses faced the barriers and the number this week is likely to be the same. The field that will parade is probably the best that has beein seen out in this race, the reason being the extra opportunities that have been offered by different clubs. At present there is no very decided favourite for the race for a number have each won a race and have shown exceptionally good form in doing their work. The first winner was Mr G. Rosenbaum’s colt Horse Power, who won the North Island Challenge Cup at Auckland. The time, 2.20 for a mile, so early in the season was exceptionally good. Horse Power is a fine colt by Jack Pffijsts from Free Advice, and is trained niy R. B. Berry. He had very bad luck in being interfered with in tlie Timaru Nursery Stakes, and he likely to be favourite for the race.

Especially good reports come from the North island regarding Sandusky, a colt by a racecourse favourite in Jewel Pointer from Bonnie Bingen, the dam of Bonny Azure. Sandusky was started four times for a first, second and third, and in each race has performed like a. champion in the making. He is in F. J. Smith’s stable. Two’s Loose is another by Jack Potts from the American mare. Mercedes, and he showed, great speed in winning the Timaru Nursery Stakes, although a mistake at the finish almost cost him the . race. AVith him will be bracketed a fine filly in Francisco, also trained by M. B. Edwards. This filly has speed to burn, but. apparently has not yet mastered the art of beginning quickly.

Ferula and' Parauri were both winners at the South Canterbury Jockey Chib’s meeting, each beating fields of older and more experienced horses. Parauri has yet to run a poor race, and he may be expected to be goingon when some of the others have finished.

Southland, a colt by XVrack-Regina. Logan, bred in Southland, in his early work showed exceptional speed, but with it he developed bad bar Tier manners and a highly nervous disposition. Mr J. J. Kennerley’s charge has improved wonderfully of late, and he is fancied by Addington trackwatchers. Another from headquarters is F. G. Holmes’s Bayard by Frank Worthy from that great mare Bonny Logan. Bayard ran a good race in the Timaru Nursery, finishing fourth, and his work at Addington has been of a high order. C. S. Donald will produce .Tackaranda, second in the. Nursery Stakes, but she has suffered from a cold and' may not have fully recovered. At her best she is distinctly useful. Don Aeron has show:: promising form, and 'l'/.ree Bolls will have admirers. but it may be later that Taruna. and King’s Jubilee will show their best form.

The Sapling Stakes thisr time looks like providing the best race in its history, and the public in a wide range of betting may ‘elect as favourites: Horso Power. Sandusky and Two’s, Loose.
