Royal. Order at Flemington: The success of Royal Order at Flemington on Saturday is of much New Zealand interest. He is a two-year-old by Limond from Anklet by Absurd from Bronze, and was pulrchased as a yearling by Mrs H. N. Aynsley of Christchurch for 550 guineas. He went into A. McAulay’s stable, but .before being raced, was taken over by Mr J. Richardson of Dunedin, who left him with McAulay until a few months ago, when he sent him to Melbourne to be trained by S. G. Ware. Royal Ord,er raced a few times in Canterbury, and although he did not win a race, he gave every indication of better things ahead, especially with a patient policy. Saturday's race extended over seven ’furlongs, a long distance for a two-year-old at this stage of the season, and as he appeared to win comfortably, he will no doubt now be labelled as a Derby (candidate. He figures in the lists for both the Australian and Victoria classics. This was Ware’s first success since he was reinstated as a trainer a short while back, and the colt also gave W. Jenkins, apprenticed to Ware, his first success since he returned to the saddle after a year’s suspension. Mr Richardson w r as present on Saturday to see his representative perform, and according to advice received from him last week, the win was confidently expected. Royal Order is one' of the few remaining Limond colts living, as most of that sire’s progeny were gelded, and as Veilmond has made a success as a sire in his first two seasons, Mr Richardson’s youngster would now command a high price, even from a breeding point of view.

NOTES ON THE RACING.

BIG RACE SURPRISES

[special to “star.”] AUCKLAND, June G. There was a large crowd at Ellerslie for the first day of the Auckland Racing Club’s Winter meeting, and the sun shone, although the wind was cold. Heavy showers began prior to the Cornwall Handicap, and the course cut up badly.

Sky Pilot Succeeds. Saint Music had a clear lead tor the most part in the Greenlane Steeplechase, and. passing the stands, he was followed by a bunch comprising Lucidus, Emancipation, Kinkle. Sky 1 dot and Tea Chat. Saint Musk had a sixlengths advantage of Lucidus and Kinkle -oing up the hill the last time but Skv Pilot, who was tilth at. that stage, had caught him at the second to last fence, the stone wall, at the foot of the straight, where St. Musk lost his rider. This left Sky 1 Hot well clear, and he beat Emancipation easily, with Kinkle in third place. Then came London, Domo, and Book Law. Lucidus fell on the hill the (

second time. The winner was a good favourite.

Favourite Prevails.

Far Land, the first choice of . the score of chances' in the Jervois Handicap, was soon in front, and after a furlong, he showed the way to Pirate King, Small Boy, Very Glad, and Erndale. On the home turn, these were still the first four, and Small Boy was fifth, Alyth sixth, and Gay Rebel ninth. At the distance, Erndale moved up on the inner, followed by Smtill Boy wide out. Erndale held on to beat Small Boy by a head, with Gaj’ Rebel third, followed by Alyth, Very Glad, Captain Bruce and Far Land, who did not run on well. Promising Hurdler.

Collision, the winner of the Penrose Hurdles, is a good sort, and the best races may not be beyond . him next winter. He was backed down to odds-on, and- won very decisively, after being kept well back until six furlongs from home. At the second to last hurdle, he took the lead from Gay Broney, and won by three and a half lengths. Lady Ruler was third, and then came Red Fox, Gadger, and Spearcourt, 'who pulled hard in the early stages. The Northern Hurdles:

A high class field lined up for the Great Northern Hurdles, and provided a .race in keeping with its history. At the first hurdle, there were three casualties, Lap Up, Roxy and Tout le Monde falling. The lastnamed did not see the obstacle. Lord Vai, Killadar and Valpeen lejl together over this fence, but Modern Maid rushed to the front, and entering the back, she was a dozen lengths ahead of Valpeen and (who fell). Passing the stands, the second time, Huskie and Sandy Dix -were piloting Jolly Beggar and Erination, with Lord Vai heading the rest. With about five furlongs to go, the front divisions included Sandy Dix, Jolly Beggar, Huskie, Erination, and Lord Vai, the last-named making a fast run to be second at the straight. High Quality fell at the previous fence. The four .leaders -were bunched at the foot of the straight. Sandy Dix won well by a. length from Huskie, with Jolly Beggar two and a half lengths away, holding off Lord Vai, who was a close fourth. There were wide intervals between Master Musk, Erination, Pahu, and Modern Maid, and Royal Limond was always whipping in the field. Boomerang Turns Up.

Following Sandy Dix’s surprise, there was another turn-up in the Cornwall Handicap, when Boomerang won in a very tight finish with Valmint and De Friend, short heads, separating the three. Royal Dance, Valmint, and Te Hai were together in front running through the straight, and the order down the back was Royal Dance, Te Hai, Grand City, Valmint, De Friend, and King Rey, with Boomerang fourth to last. Boomerang kept mowing them down on the home turn, those entering the home turn ahead of him being Royal Dance and Te Hai, De Friend, Valmint, Enge, and King Rey, while Rama's pair, Horowhenua and Tooley Street, lay behind him. De Friend, Valmint and Boomerang, in turn, had the mastery in the final run, and behind them came King Rey, Enge, Knight of Australia, and Te Hai. / All Irish Wins Well. • All Irish and Rozel were the chief disputants practically throughout the Hunt Club Hurdles, and with half a mile to go they were clear of Lady England, Bells of Bow, and Lochiel Lad. All Irish had a life at the last fence, but he recovered cleverly, and beat Rozel with six lengths to the good. Lady England was ‘ third, and then came Lochiel Lad. Cynical Kid was very tired when he fell at the last fence. Won All the Way.

Versant began best in the Members’ Handicap, and he was never headed, although opposed by several other reputed mudlarks. After a furlong, Greek Gold ran up to the leader from fourth place, with Black Thread and Whirling lying next. Kilonsa improved on the bend, but the leaders as they straightened up were still Versant, Black Thread and Greek Gold. Kilonsa and Whirling were close behind... Versant beat Whirling'by threequarters of a length, with a similar interval to Prince Acre. The best of the others were Black Thread. Greek Gold, and Kilonsa.

MEETINGS TO COME June 9. —Ashbuirton. June 19, 23.—Auckland. CANTERBURY PARK T.C. PROTEST BY ASHBURTON. \ I CHRISTCHURCH, June 7. The troubles of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club are coming thick and fast. Two major problems will occupy the members of the committee at a special meeting to-morrow morning. One is whether the club will race at Riccarton next Saturday, or abandon the meeting, and the other, a protest by Ashburton Trotting Club, which has lodged an objection with the New Zealand Trotting Conference, on the ground that the Ashburton Club is racing on Wednesday, and wishes to have next Saturday free, in the event of a postponement through bad weather conditions.

The objection raised by the Ashburton Club has created a considerable stir, as this is believed to be the first occasion on which application has been made to reserve a,date. It is understood that several members of the committee of the Canterbury Park Club are willing that the club race at Riccarton. Owners and trainers feel that the Canterbury Park Club is under an obligation to hold the meeting, as they have been put to considerable expense, in keeping their horses in strict training, for several weeks.
