£6,000,000 BAIL FOR BRITONS
BOLIVIAN CONTRACT CASE LA PAZ. April 6. A total sum in bail which is nearly twice the note circulation of Bolivia lias been demanded for the two English business mon who have been detained in prison for nine weeks. They are Mr. Anthony Ashton and Mr. J. H. Webster. They were arrested on fraud charges on January 31. Their hail has been set at 80,000,000 bolivianos each, a sum equivalent at par rates to about £6,000,000. Their lawyer, Senor Terrazas, has issued a statement declaring that this bail is “exorbitant.” He has appealed to the Superior Court in La Paz. The charge brought against the two mon is that they made certain sales with intent to defraud the Bolivian Government. They were arrested as the result of the investigations of a committee appointed by the Government to revise war contracts placed by the former Government.—B.U.P.
