WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
PAROA BRANCH. At the monthly meeting of the Paroa Women’s Institute, the vice-president, Mrs Woollett, presided over a. good attendance. Two visitors were present and one new member was welcomed. The roll call, “Ways of improving our Institute,' brought forth many new ideas, which will be carried out in the near future.
The roll call, “The silliest thing I ever , did,” caused much amusement. Competition results were:—“Ma--1 terial Scarf,” Mrs Nailer 1, Mrs Ash- ' ton 2., “Tea-cosy ” Miss Coombes 1, Mrs Worsley 2, Mrs Woollett 3. Motto for the month was “There’s nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.’’ It was decided that members rally their friends together, so as to get enough members to form a Red Cross branch here. Hostesses for the evening were Mrs Nailer and Miss E. Baker. RUNANGA. Mrs Swan presided over the June meeting of the Runanga W.I. One new member was welcomed. Mrs W. Duggan tendered her resignation as secretary, which was accepted' ■ with regret. Mrs J. Braithwaite was elected secretary. The roll call, “The place I would like to visit and why.” The competition for knitted bed jacket resulted: Mesdames Duggan 1, J. Hewison 2, and Higson 3. Madeira cake: Mesdames Duggan 1, Campbell 2, Gillaly 3. Mrs Hill’s demonstration of tin-foil pictures was greatly appreciated. Next month’s competitions, “Something from a yard of check gingham, and cocoanut ice.” Hostesses: Mesdames Gillaly, S. Braithwaite, Timlin, Gallon, Long, and Jenkinson. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Graham, Williams, Critchley, and Howard’. The social half-hour was spent in community singing.
