RUNANGA BOROUGH COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. [our own correspondent.] Present at last evening’s meeting of the Runanga Borough Council were the Mayor, Mr R. McTaggart, Councillors F. Oakley, Y. Rutherford, E. Kennedy, J. McTigue, and H. Duggan. An apology was received from Cr. W. Pendlebury. The Under Secretary of Mines (Mr A. Tyndall) wrote in regard to the proposed water supply scheme saying that the plans of the scheme proposed by Messrs Gannan and Stevens of Ashburton, were being investigated, and the Council would be later advised.
The Minister of Mines (Hon. P. C. Webb) wrote in regard to the road improvements at Dunollie which the Mines Department had subsidised to the extent of £lBB, saying that from enquiries made it would appear to him that the work had been retarded, possibly on account of the shortage of laboui' or through the wet weather, and saying that he would be pleased to hear that better* progress was now being made. —Replied to, stating that the weather had’ delayed progress. Mr Richard Armstrong wrote in regard to the proposed water supply to be laid on to the Domain pavilion for washing facilities for footballers, and suggesting that provision be made there by the addition of a hose for motorists to wash their cars. There are a large number of cars in the town, he said, and 1 he considered that this amenity would be much appreciated. He suggested a charge of 1/for the use of the .water. Councillors agreed that .the idea was good, and it was decided that the request be given effect. The question of charge apd control was held in abeyance.
Messrs Joyce and Brosnan forwarded deed of assignment of a section from D. Syme to T. Halliday for approval. The Mayor and Cr. Duggan were authorised to sign.
The Health report for April, showing onie case of infantile paralysis and six visits to habitations, was received. The Runanga Croquet Club wrote asking that evidence be given them that the Council had granted them a section of land next to their present green. It was explained that they were approaching the Mines’ Department for assistance in the laying down of another green and the Department required proof that the ground belonged to the Club. —Decided that a letter certifying that the ground had been granted be sent to the Club. Building permits totalling £312 10/- were approved. The foreman reported that 70 loads, of ashes and 1 37 of gravel had been carted for the Seven Mile road, Dunollie Road, and Herd Street improvements and that the work there had been hampered by wet weather. The bridge at the entrance to the Domain was removed and replaced with concrete pipes. The concrete footpath had been completed at Manderson’s premises and four loads of gravel were carted for the work, also one of gravel and one of ashes for the approaches. Fourteen loads of gravel had been carted for the Ward Street culvert, where the concrete work was now being carried out. Drains in Walker and Mill Streets had been cleaned and a drain blockage in Ward Street, had been cleared. Dunollie Road and McGowan Street had been dragged. The report was received as satisfactory. The Hospital report was received as satisfactory. The overdraft limit was fixed at £BOO. It was decided to have another twofoot mould, made for the making of concrete pipes, with the intention of making an early start in laying the main drain in McGowan Street in concrete pipes. Accounts totalling £69/3/9, were passed for payment. In the Domain Fuind accounts for £2/1/6 were passed. <
