Mr. A. F. Jeavons, Railways Department Waipara. will arrive to-morrow, on transfer to the Goods Office, Greymouth.
Miss Catherine Closs, Dunollie, underwent an operation in the Westland Hospital, on Friday. She is progressing satisfactorily.
Mr. James Hector, of the staff of the Dispatch Foundry Co., Ltd., Greymouth, left on Saturday, to join the ferry steamer, Maori, as third engineer.
A Honolulu cablegram announced the death of Mr. G. F. Baker, a banker, who was taken ill during a yachting cruise, and whom the Niagara’s surgeon attended in answer to an appeal.
Rear-Admiral W. T. Randle Ford, formerly in command of the Australian Navy, and now Superintendent at Malta, has been promoted to ViceAdmiral. Captain H. A. Forster has 1 been promoted to Rear-Admiral (stated a London cablegram).
The death occurred on Saturday afternoon, at the Grey Hospital, of Mr William Rouse, aged 79 years. Deceased was a native of Kent, England, and followed the occupation of a bricklayer, working in the Invercargill and Grey districts. He had been an inmate of the Old People’s Home for the past seven years. He! has no known ,I’elatives. The funeral took place this afternoon, at the Karoro Cemetery, the service being conducted by Archdeacon J. A. Jermyn.
Mr F. Lamont, of the literary Tstaff of the “Greymouth Evening Star,” was met on Saturday evening, by fellowmembers of the Greymouth Journalists’ Union, and presented with a fireside chair, to mark his recent marriage. The presentation was made, on behalf of the Union, by the President, Mr J. A. Mclnroe, who expressed best wishes for the future happiness, of Mr and Mrs Lamont. Other members of the Union added their good wishes and congratulations.
The death occurred at Wellington on Saturday of Mr Charles Hall, of Dannevirke, in his. ninety-fifth year. Mr Hall, who was a member of Parliament for Waipawa, during the time of the Seddon and Ward Governments, was born at Malton, Yorkshire. He arrived at Napier, in the Countess of Kintone in 1875. He was actively interested in land settlement. During his public life he was Mayor of Woodville, chairman of the. Waipawa County Council, District Coroner, member of the Waipawa Licensing 'Committee, Hawke’s Bay Land Board, and Hawke’s Bay Education Board. Mr Hall is survived by two daughters and one son, Mrs J. A. H. Nash (Auckland), Mrs A. Wright (Dannevirke), and Mr G. F. Hall (Wellington).— Press Assn.
