TWO MEN IMPRISONED.

[PEP. PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 31. Rifling cars in the city on the nights of May 21 and 22. Robert Cyril T-el-fcr and William Thomas Crocker stole goods valued, at £4B. and ranging from a. wireless set to a. pair of trousers. Both were sentenced to a year’s imprisonment with hard labour.

When they appeared in the Court, before Mr. Lewy S.M., Teller was described as a labourer aged 42, and Crocker as a. butcher and labourer, aged 46. “The whole of these cases are el thefts from motor cars. A very largo number of complaints have been received,” said Detective-Sergeant Holmes, referring to the eight charges against the accused. “There seems to he little reason why they should prey on people the way they have been doing. Both have got. bad records.” , 2 „ The Detective-Sergeant said that. Detectives Watt and Trethewey had been detailed to investigate the complaints. Suspicion had fallen on the accused, and goods had been found in their house. . .... “These thefts were committed while under the influence of liquor.” Telfer claimed. “Most of the stuff has been recovered.’’

Crocker had nothing to say. “You are both aiming steadily at being habitual criminals," said the Magistrate. “It doesn’t rest with me. bin "■ t will happen.”
