LICENSEE ASSAULTED

AN ANGRY HUSBAND. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, May 28. For assaulting Joseph Henry Winter. formerly licensee of the Waverley Hotel, a fine of £lO was imposed on Ernest Munro, by Mr. Orr Walker. S.M., at the Police Court to-day. The police said an inquiry agent, booked a room at the hotel, and later, accompanied by another inquiry agent, and by Munro, he went along a fire escape to a window outside of Winter’s room. Munro raised the window, and jumped into the darkened room. One inquiry agent shone a,torch on Winter while Munro assaulted him.

The police further stated that Mrs. Munro was in the room. She switched on the light. Munro and Winter moved out into the corridor. Later, the housekeeper was called to Winter’s room. She found him in a dazed condition. He was suffering from severe injuries. The police found an Indian club broken in' two pieces. Winter was for some weeks in the hospital. Counsel for Munro said that he and his wife had since been reconciled. Counsel for Winter said that Mrs. Munro was in the room Tor the first time, she having called on business. The room was not darkened. Winter did not. attack Munro first.
