Mrs. D. Jackson will arrive, this afternoon, from Wellington, on a visit to relations in Cobden.

Messrs P. Morgan (Perth), Robert, and j William. Morgan, of Sydney, arrived yesterday on a visit to their sisters, Mrs. M. Anton (Cobden), J. McFarlane (Kumara), and E. Mitchell (Waiuta). ■
The death has occurred at Chicago, U.S.A., of Mrs Deere, wife of John Deere, son of Mr and Mrs John Deere, of Greymouth. The late Mrs Deere, a native of Chicago, was aged 40 years. She visited Greymouth in 1927. .Besides her husband, she leaves one daughter, aged seven years. I

The death took place suddenly, at Dunedin, yesterday, of Mr. David Stark, a former resident of the West Coast. For a number of years, he was employed as a stationmaster on the West Coast, but had since resided in Dunedin. He is survived by his wife, frtimerly Miss Garth, of Ahaura), and a grown-up family.
Engineer Rear-Admiral E. D. Sydenham, R.N. (retired), is visiting New Zealand. From the year 1910 to 1913, Rear-Admiral Sydenham was responsible for the supply of fuel for the Navy in Australia, New Zealand, and on the China station, and during that time he made Westport his headquarters as a coal centre, and it was there that he married Mrs Sydenham. RearAdmiral and Mrs Sydenham left Christchurch, to-day, for the West Coast, where they will spend some time.
At the Wellington prison last evening, the staff met to say farewell to the superintendent, Mr. John Down, who is retiring after 40 years’ service with the Prisons Department. An armchair -was presented to Mr. Down on behalf of the staff by Mr. B. L. Dallard, Con-troller-General ofxPrisons, and a clock was presented by Mr. A. Longmore on behalf of the Wellington Justices’ Association. Mr. Down’s successor is Mr. W. E. Stewart, at present chief "warder of' the Wellington prison.—Press Assn.
