SCOTLAND MOVING

DRIFT TOWARDS IRELAND Scot hind was reported recently by an official of the Glasgow Observatory to be drifting toward Ireland—and America —at the rale of more than Bft a year. Mr. Thomas R. Ttinntlhill. a member of the staff, said calculations showed that the mainland had shifted westward 60ft. in tin* hist 7u years. F.ngl.ind. he explained, has not joined in the movement, and consequently Croat Britain is apparently "bending in two."

Dr. Kiri ley Mai her. professor of gt ology at Harvard, described as "extremely important to geology" observations at Glasgow of a "drift" of Scotland towards Ireland. Somewhat, similar phenomena, he said, were under observation in Greenland. - Iceland, and Scandinavia.

"We have been suspicions.” he sai "that there wore changes in longltud ar several places on the surface of tli earth which would indicate a slo movement of the earth’s outer she! The difficulty is to get sufficiently pr cise measurements. Our modern metl ods are very much superior since th coming of radio to measurements < 50 years ago.

"Unfortunately there is some ind cation of a curious stretching of tli earth’s outer shell, followed by a co: traction, as though points of observ. lion moved in one direction, som times within a day.

"That complicates the problem, and I would like to know just how the Glasgow observations were determined whether by observation of the stars <>n just one occasion or frequently, over a long period.

"The Glasgow observations may 'mean something of great significance, i They do not surprise me, for it is ’right in line with things we are discovering.”
