£100,000 FILM SCRAPPED

MERLE OBERON INJURED LONDON. March 18. Injuries received by Miss Merle Oberon, the film actress, in an accident yesterday, may cause the abandonment of Alexander Korda’s spectacular film version of “I. Claudius,” starring Mr. Charles Laughton as Claudius and Miss Oberon as Messalina. Miss Oberon was driving a car along Bolsover-street, Eustoii-road. when she was involved in a collision with another car at the corner of Carhur-ten-street. She received a cut on the back of her head, which needed four stitches, a small cut over one ear, and a bruise over one eyebrow. She also has concussion. None of her injuries will cause disfigurement, but her doctors advise her taht she will have to stay in bed for at least a fortnight. “It is even possible,” Mr. Korda said last night, "that she will not bo able to work again for two months."

"1, Claudius” is only half tinished, and it is very unlikely that there will be time to complete it in the period, at most throe weeks, between Miss Cheron's recovery ami the expiry of Mr. Laughton’s contract. The film would have cost at least £lOO,OOO. If it has to- be abandoned the loss will be £50.000 or more. It is understood that the company is covered by insurance.
