TUNNEL ROAD SCHEME
LOCAL BODIES’ APPROVAL
[per press association.]
CHRISTCHURCH, April 29
Support for the proposed tunnel road between Christchurch and Lyttelton was given by 23 of 28 local bodies’ boards and associations which were represented at a conference held to-day on the subject.
This conference was the climax of efforts made by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce since a suggestion was made by the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, that if the Chamber obtained a demonstration of unanimity on the proposal, the Government was prepared to carry it through. Mr. J. Wood, the Engineer-in-Chief to the Public Works Department presided at the. conference. Mr. Wood stated that there was an impression that the Government, was prepared to pay the whole of the cost of the tunnel road. ,This was a mistaken idea, it being based on a misunderstanding of the remarks made by the Prime Minister.
Mr. Wood’s statement provoked questions about the actual extent of support which the Government would give the project. These, Mr. Wood said, he could not answer. However, he quoted the Acting-Prime Minister (Hon. P. Fraser) as having suggested that the Government might find half of the cost. Howver, it was a matter for the Cabinet.
