THE CORONATION
CARPETS FOR THE ABBEY. LONDON, March 31. The great. Coronation carpet for the nave of Westminster Abbey arrived from Glasgow in a sealed box, and was borne into the Abbey by 20 workmen. Manufactured in one piece without any seams, it is 173 ft long and 17ft wide. It will run from the west door, through the centre of the nave, and past the choir stalls up to the raised Coronation Theatre. Accompanying it were the carpets for the Coronation Theatre, the Sanctuary, Edward the Confessor’s Chapel, and the annexe.
Scottish workmen have been engaged on the carpets, which have a total weight of four tons, since the beginning, ,pf the year. They are of Chenille * Axminster of exceptional fineness. There are more than 1700 separately spun strands of fine -worsted to the square inch. Blue is the colour for the main carpet, the side fillings being in-a. deeper hue than the central portion: Gold carpets will be laid in the
Theatre, the Sanctuary, and traverses. The annexe will be carpeted; mainly in blue. The decoration in the annexe will be different from the last Coronation. In jilace of banners there is to bo a fawn background l of “Glamis” fabric, made in Dundee, and some of the Duke of Buccleuch’s famous tapestries in gold' mounts as mural decorations. Here there will be sufficient rout seats in gold for SO persons.
