SOHO UNDERWORLD
MURDER TRIAL OPENED.

The most sensational of the many murders recorded in London s most cosmopolitan area, Soho, is being investigated by the Assize Court The trial opened of Roger Vernon, alias Charles Lacroix, thirty-six, charged with the murder of Max Kassal, otherwise Red Max. Suzanne Bortron, twenty-five, was charged as an accomplice. In accordance with the usual French procedure, five minutes was allowed to photographers before the Judge took his seat, in which time the accused was snapped, while an artist rapidly made a sketch. There was a duel between the Judge and Vernon, in which the Judge reviewed Vernon’s life. He forced him to answer most damaging questions. After being reminded of his escape 'from Devils Island. Vernon described how repeatedly he asked Max to return a loan of £25. Eventually Max •came to the fiat in Soho. “Max ar--1 rived furious. I knew immediately he lor I must be killed. He tried to strangle me, and tried to seize my pis- , tol. It emptied itself by itself.” The case was adjourned.
