“SAVE THE MOTHERS”

BRITAIN’S NEW CAMPAIGN.

[BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.]

(Received April 29, 1 P.m.) LONDON* April 28. An important new “Save the Mothers’’ campaign was announced by the Minister of Health, following publication of a White Paper* embodying the report of a committee’s investigation into maternal mortality. The report states that attempted abortions are apparently frequent and increasing, and are responsible for a number of deaths. The Minister, therefore decided, on the immediate appointment of a committee of medical and legal experts, with Mr Norman Birkett, K.C., as chairman, to consider steps 1 to reduce mortality from this cause. Another measulre will be the provision of flying squads of skilled hospital workers to attend: women too ill to be removed from the homes. The report also urges further research into the possible influence of diet on child-bearing.
