VICAR’S PLEA TO KING
FOR IMPRISONED SON. LONDON, Marell 14. An appeal to the King was sent yesterday by a Leeds vicar on behalf of his son, Ronald Hugh Stowell Phillips. aged IS, a Leeds University' student, who was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment at Leeds Assizes after he had pleaded guilty to attempting to seduce a member of the R.A.F. from his allegiance. The father, the Rev. R. S. Phillips, vicar of St. Peter’s, Hunslet Moor, Leeds, sent the following telegram to His Majesty: —
“My boy of IS was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment at Leeds
Assizes on Tuesday, under Section ;L of the Incitement to Disaffection Act, of 1934. : X “I do not seek to condone the .offence, which he admitted. No hurt, however, was done to the realm by what was generally regarded - as aii < impulsive act of youthful folly. “His University teachers s’pokei highly of him in court as one wliji should make a most useful and loyal citizen. < “I humbly appeal to your Majesty -on the eve of your gracious coronation -as one who served your beloved father and our country during the war —to exercise your royal clemency on behalf of my son.” •
