BIG FIRE AT SYDNEY

The five-story building, occupied by Grimley Limited, in the Broadway, | City, -was destroyed by fire, early this, morning. The damage is estimated at £lOO,OOO. Three shops in front of the building were also razed. The fire, heralded by a series of terrific explosions, spread among inflammable stocks, including paints and spirits, with amazing rapidity. Every brigade in the city area attended, and onlv the strenuous efforts by the firemen prevented the flames spreading to other buildings in the block, which included Grace Bros.’s huge emporium. Eight families in homes at the rear of Grim ley’s, raced for their lives, when the flames threatened to ignite the houses. Y.M.C.A. SOCIAL HALL. GISBORNE, April 28. Tlie Y.M.C.A. social hall, Kopuwhara railway camp, was destroyed by fire early this morning, the building being razed and the contents lost. The building was the property of the Public Works Department, and valued at about £5OO. The equipment lost by the. Y.M.C.A. included i two billiard tables, talkie projection 'plant, canteen stock and library associations. The loss is covered by insurance.
