MANAGER CONVICTED

AUCKLAND, April 27
Appearing in the Magistrate’s Court on summons, William Maskell, aged 57, manager of a Self Help store ip Karangahape Road, pleaded guilty to the theft of seven bags of potatoes, valued at £l/15/-, the property of Wong Sic Yue, a greengrocer next door.
The police said that for some , time the Chinese had been missing potatoes and onions from the back of the shop. A watch was kept and Maskell was caught in the act. Defending counsel said that Maskell had been in his present employment for five years. Apart from this lapse he was an exemplary character andi he could not account for the. lapse. The potatoes were sent into #tock, and, the proceeds went into the till of his employers, whp. hpwey.er, knew nothing about it. Mas'kell’s wife had been ill an,d this had affected him greatly', . . The Magistrate said that it seemed an extraoi-dinary case. U was not ai sudden impulse as were a number of thefts. ' . Maskell was fined £1 on one chaige ami convicted and discharged on another. Fte was ordered to make restitution.
