WORLD’S DEAREST BRIDGE
CHARING CROSS PROJECT The projected Charing Cross Bridge, and consequent road improvements, would cost £32,500,000, according to a joint report of three London County Council committees, issued recently. Of the total £25,000,000 would be spent in property and trade compensation. It would be the dearest bridge in the world. Some comparisons are:—San Francisco Bridge .. £1G,000,000 Sydney Harbour .. .. 10.000,000
New Forth Bridge (projected) .. 3,500,000 Waterloo Bridge .. .. 1,500,000 The estimated cost, it is pointed j out, would be equal to the cost of j clearing London’s slums and rehousing the people displaced; be more than the combined total expenditure
of the old London School Board and the London County Council of those days. It is added that Lambeth Bridge is still capable of carrying at least twice as much traffic as it does now without congestion; Vauxhall Bridge, one of the few six line bridges in London, will be capable of carrying much more traffic when the southern approach improvement is completed. The new Waterloo Bridge will be able to take more than twice the traffic of the old bridge. Mr. Herbert Morrison, leader of the London County Council, said recently that the council remained uncommitted on the scheme.
