HOKITIKA NOTES

HOKITIKA, April 28

A meeting was held in the Town Hall last night at 7.30, to make arrangements for the local Coronation celebrations, the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) presiding. Present: Messrs T. W. Duff, E. L. Park, H. T. Parry, G. Heinz and G. F. Coles (town clerk) representing the Hokitika Borough Council,; D. R. Dowell and D. Breeze (representing the Rugby Union); W. H. Stopforth, C. Kelleher, G. Bryant, A. H. Lawn and W. J. Bruce representing the Businessmen’s Association.

It was decided that the seven-a-side Rugby fotball tournament which is to be held on Cass Square on Coronation Day, be suspended while the Wellington service is broadcasted and amplified. No charge would be made for admission to the Square in the morning. The Municipal Band would be asked to he in attendance. It was stated that the Education Board was arranging for services for school children.

It. was decided to ask the Businessmen’s Association to arrange for decorations and lighting, and for a special shopping day during the -week. The Borough Council will arrange for strings of coloured' lights across the main streets and flag decorations lor the pavilion on Cass Square. In the case of a wet day on May 12, an alternative programme on the lines of the Wellington ceremony will be arranged.

A meeting of the waterworks committee of the Hokitika Borough Council was held last evening to consider the tenders received for the supply of pumps for the new water supply. Present: The Mayor, Crs. A. H. Thompson, H. T. Parry, H. L. Michel, E. Teichelmann, G. Heinz, E. L. Park, T. W. Duff ahd the town clerk, Mr H. G. F. Coles. Fourteen tenders were received, and on the Engineer’s, advice these were reduced to four. Certain recommendations were made by Mr W. J. Radford, engineer for Kanieri Electric, Ltd., and' endorsed by Professor Campbell, and subject to these the tender of Turnbull and Jones for £495 for the pumping plant required was accepted.

An application by A. Little, Kanieri Sawmills, Ltd., for water supply to a cottage at Stoney Creek was granted at £2 per year, the applicant to have all responsibility.

The monthly meeting of the Hokitika branch of the C.A.A., was held last evening, Dr. E. Teichelmann presiding. A letter relating to the completion of the Mananui-Ruatapu road was received, and the Association-un-animously decided to support the request to have the road constructed alongside the railway. Only one and a-half miles of road remains to he made. Letters were received from the Greymopth branch, (1) asking cooperation in obtaining broadcast reports twice daily, from 3YA of the weather conditions prevailing at various parts.—Agreed to support. (2) Asking that steps be taken to have signs erected at the Hokitika and Rimu ends of Adair’s Road, notifying motorists when .the road is closed for traffic. —It. was resolved that the secretary interview the dredge manager (Mr Radford). respecting these signs. It was decided to support a request to do all in its power to abate the wandering stock nuisance on the public roads. It was decided to approach the Railway authorities to see if some control can be taken over the traffic through the railway yards, as a- real danger exists at the gate leading into Fitzherbert Street. It was decided to apply for 22 road signs and a few “silent police” for corners. A letter from Mr G. H. Chapman (Ross) requesting that the Railway Department be approached for the construction of turn-outs, on the Hokitika railway bridge, two on each side, was discussed. It was pointed out that it is a traffic bridge, that it is over half-a-mile long, that there is considerable traffic on it leading to the aerodrome, golf links, dairymen’s homes, and the homes of residents; that horse-drawn vehicles hold up traffic for a considerable time, etc. — It was decided to ask the various local bodies, who. contribute to the upkeep of the bridge, to move in the matter of turn-outs, as requested.
