TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping . MEETINGS TO COME April 29, May I—Oamaru.1 —Oamaru. May B—Amberley.8—Amberley. May 8, 12 —Hawke’s Bay . May 12, 15—Egmont. May 12 —Ashburton County . May 12 —Southland. May 12 —Bay of Islands, at Pukekohe. May 12, 15 —Otaki-Maori. May 15 —Waipa. May 20, 22 —South Canterbury. May 22 —Carterton. May 22, 24—Waikato. May 29—Foxton. Last Refrain: Last Refrain appeared to be ridden into the ground in the Timaru Cup and left without a finish. He cannot be condemned on that failure. Potent at Riccarton: Potent, owned and trained by J. Johnston, of Kaiata, has been taken to Riccarton, and will race at Amberley next month. Not For Sale: A commissioner for an overseas •buyer is stated to have asked the owners of Royal Chief, Smoke Screen and Haughty Winner to -put a price on their two-year-olds, but in each case the reply was “not for sale.” Southdown:

Southdown made a winning debut over hurdles at Timaru. He made one bad jump, but improved as he went along. There was not much real strength in the opposition, but Southdown shaped promisingly and will be improved by the experience.

Recommissioned: H. Dulieu has taken Cute Melody in hand again at New Plymouth. The Nigger Minstrel filly is reported to be in splendid trim after her spell and should be ready to race early next season. A winner at her last two starts, she should benefit by, the patient policy adopted with her, and she appears likely to develop good class as a three-year-old.

A Noted Family: A yearling, standing 15.2, and built in proportion, was on the Southland •Racing Club’s track at Invercargill last week. He is by Colonel Cygnus (imp.) from SpeedAigh't, by Paper Money from Simper (dam of a long line of descendants, including Affectation, Illume, Gold Light, Razzle Dazzle, Dazzling Light, Lucky Light, Ruling Light and Sir Simper), and for size and substance he is a credit to his family. Unfortunately, his dam died some time ago.

OhangaN First Win: Ohanga, who won' his first race at the recent Nelson meeting, and succeeded again at Blenheim, is by Potoa from Erie, a high-class steeplechaser. Erie should have won the Grand National Steepulechase, when she finished third to Tuki and Fireblight. One of Erie’s previous progeny was Static, who cost Mr A. Louisson 700 guineas as a yearling, and proved a failure because of unsoundness.

Monipere and Copyist: C. J. Walsh returned on Sunday, with Monipere and 6 Copyist, who raced at the Waimate and South Canterbury meetings. Monipere collected a second placing in the Waimate Cup, and was credited with being unlucky to lose. Both horses bad two outings, but Monipere’s goo* second was the only placing they j earned between them.

Staying 1 * Qualities: Dictate gave evidence by his win at Washdyke on Saturday last that, all going well with him, he will show up as a stayer next season. Now approaching his fourth year, he has not done much racing, and like numbers of the Chief Ruler breed not overdone with early activity, the best is yet to be seen of him. He can claim sound breeding on the side of his dam, Kirima, who is by Marble Arch from Mar-tigues, by Martian from EVerlast- < ing, by Padlock from Azalea (imp.), by Galliard.

Full of Promise: Irish Fiddle will go into Winter quarters with the record of a win, a third, and a fourth placing in her three appearances in public, and much interest will now be centred 1 in ’ ' her three-year-old exploits. She has every credential in looks, breeding, and temperament to develop into a high-class performer with more age and experience. Irish Fiddle, raced by Mrs J. H. Grigg, was bred at Longbeach, and is a half-sister by Day Comet to Concertpitch, who races in the colours of Mr Grigg.

Wins with Outsiders: The ex-North Island jockey, J. McFarlane, now attached to J. S. Shaw’s stable, has some detractors, but he would have been the most profitable jockey to follow during the last month. He finished up the Riverton meeting by riding Johhny (who paid over a score) and Moneyless (also at a remunerative price). At Waimate he won on Royal Gallant (again over a score) and Heloise (double figures), and brought another outsider in Silver Sight home in the Timaru Cup.

From Martara’s Family: The branch of the No. 12 family from which Martara claims descent produced the leading two-year-old in Ireland last season. This was Burdock, who won the Somerton Plate at Baldoyle. and the National Produce Stakes and Railway Stakes at the Curragh, and was second in bis only other start. Burdock is by the highly successful sire Soldennis, a brother to Wet Kiss, dam of Captain Bunsby from Clarendon', by Ajldford from Thistle, by Neil Gow from Flowerer, by Persimmon. Thistle, who was dam of the good two-year-old Fohanaun, was a half-sister to Flower of the West, grand-dam of Martara.

The Betting System: The various systems of betting came in for considerable discussion at the Timaru meeting (writes/‘Sentinel”). Owing to a published report that the betting would be 75-25 quite a number were wrath when they found on arrival that win and place instead of a single pool Would be the basis of business. Some declared their intention of not betting, but somebody else did as the returns showed a very substantial increase over last year's figures. It is understood that the club has definitely decided to use the win and place system in future with both bets procurable at one window.

Finished Racing: Lochlaggan' is Io race no more. After the Riverton Racing Club's Easter fixture the daughter of Glen-

truin was her owner’s stud at Otautau, and will be bred from next season. The Wood'end mare has been noted as a brilliant sprinter (writes “Stopwatch”), but her form was not always consistent, and during the latter stages of her career she behaved sourly. Lochlaggan’s deeds may not compare too favourably with those of her dam, Glentruin, but the falne of the latter has often brought, about an insignificant aspect as to the deeds of the Woodend mare. Lochlaggan won all her races over sprint distances, the farthest being seven furlongs, but the idea was held that she would ese out a solid mile. Lochlaggan’s stud career will be followed with keen interest.

NOTES FROM RICCARTON t EXCELLENT SCHOOLING [special' TO “STAR.”] RICCARTON, April 27. The main interest in this morning’s work at Riccarton. centred in horses to race at Oamaru, this week, but as most of them were at Washdyke on Saturday last, there was little serious galloping,, and a comparison of the times would be of no value. The only • item to arouse enthusiasm was another excellent schooling task between Sky Pilpt and Monastic, who negotiated two rounds over the big fences in fast time, without making any errors. The former had too much pace for his companion, and always had him struggling, but Monastic, nevertheless, is coming on, and should improve further, with a race or two. Sky Pilot gives promise of being an early steeplechase winner. He was ridden by R. K. Smith, who suffered a broken toe when riding Haeretonu, at Washdyke, but pluckily took this morning’s mount, owing to the difficulty of securing another rider. - Pahu accompanied Tea Urn in a round of the country, the latter giving a much-improved display. Gay Boy did a similar task in a dashing manner.

Giggleswick shaped satisfactorily in a round of the hurdles.

Veteran Trainer’s Death: The death occurred, early this morning, of a veteran trainer, R. Ellis, who had been ailing for some time. He had a long and varied career, and won several big races in his time. Probably the best horses he handled were St. Denis, Will Oakland, Finora, and Te Awahina. He owned Finora, who held the seven furlong Australian record for several years, and bred Golden Dart from her. / ■ ' MARLBOROUGH R.C. MYRIAM WINS DOUBLE.

Trotting MEETINGS TO COME May I—Kaikoura.1 —Kaikoura. May B—Waikato,8 —Waikato, May B—Oamaru.8 —Oamaru. May 12, 15—Forbury Park. May 29—Canterbury Park. June 12 —Ashburton, June 19, 23—Auckland. Related to Lucky Jack: Laurene Wood, a. winner at Washdyke on Saturday, is the first foal of her dam, Mavis Wood, which is by Rogerwood, and comes from the same family as that rising star, Lucky Jack. Betting- at Oamaru: At the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting on. May 8 the Forbury system of betting will be in operation. This means that first and second dividends, in the proportion of 75 and 25 per. cent., will be paid, besides dividends on the placed horses in the proportion of 33 1-3 per cent. _ A Double Victory:

The double victory secured by Imposter at the Auckland meeting on Saturday is a tribute to the excellent work of the trainer, E. N. Kennerley, for the Sonoma Harvester gelding had not been previously regarded as anything above the average. Now rising nine years, Imposter is developing form rather late in life. He is a halfbrother to two useful performers in Kate Logan, 2.13 2-5. and June de Oro, 4.35. A double-gaited horse, he was successful against the unhoppled trotters in the Whitford Handicap, and later defeated the pacers in the Henderson Handicap. Coast Owners and Breeders:

The annual meeting of the West Coast Owners and Breeders’ Association took place last evening, Mr W. Reid presiding over a large attendance. The annual report and balance sheet, showing a credit balance were read and adopted. The following officers were elected: President, Mr W. Reid: Vice-president: Mr W. M. Greenhill; Committee: Messrs J. Rothwell, J. Guy and W. Hughes; Secretary: Mr R. Cooper. It; 'was decided to notify the Westport Association that an application would be made to the Greymouth, Reefton and Westland Clubs to have the, local races, reinstated at Christmas to form a-circuit. The meeting decided to support the Canterbury Association’s endeavour to.have the win and place betting system abolished, and the 1 single pool system reinstated. A' motion of condolence was passed with Mr V. Alborn in his recent bereavement.

Kewpie—a Prolific Breeder: One of the outstanding features of recent years has been the great success of Kewpie. at the stud. She has. proved a. prolific breeder, and her owner, Mr J. Gee, has no reason to regret. purchasing her at the conclusion of her racing carer. Kewpie was raced in the colours of the Messrs MeKendrick Bros., and although nor over-raced during the latter part of her career she was responsible for some- fine performances when tracks were a great deal slower than they are nowadays. It. was hack in 1926 that this daughter of I’etereta produced her first foal, a chestnut filly to Blue Mountain King, who. incidentally, was owned by McKendrick Bros., at that [time. The filly was called Kewpie’s Guy. and she gave some outstanding performances, her best effort over two miles being at Epsom in 4.25 3-5. Bred to The Triumph the following year Kewpie produced Kewpie’s Triumph, one of the most consistent horses in Auckland for some years. He could handle any kind of going and ran some splendid races in big events. Kewpie’s Bond was the re's.ult of the mare's mating with Worthy Bond, but. this filly never had a fair chance as she was always troubled with unsoundness. and a great deal of patience was needed to get her to the races. It may be worthy of

mention that Bold Venture, who won her first, race at. the Thames meeting recently, is out of Kewpie’s. Bond, who was bred to when a three-year-old. One of the. best of the progeny of Kewpie -was Kewpie’s King, but he also was troubled with ulnsoundness, and after a. brilliant three-year-old career had to be spelled for over 12 months before he could be trained again. This season he has. been twice first and once second in five starts, and provided he stands a searching preparation in the future he should make the highest grades. Kewpie’s Crest and Kewpie’s Bingen are the latest, pair to race, and of all Kewpie’s family to face the starter, the last-named is the only one who has yet to prove successful, and all that is needed with him is a little experience.

Kewpie, who is now approaching her 22nd year, is a daughter of Petereta, a. most promising American sire of trotters. This horse was imported to the Dominion in 1913 by Mr R. McMillan, and was by Peter the Great from Recoleta, by Arion from Javotte, and thus represents some of the best trotting blood in America. Matarika, the dam of Kewpie, was very speedy, and l Won several races before commencing her stud career. She was by Bellman from Georgina, by Lincoln Yet —Leeline, by Rhodes Peter. Kewpie is still hale and hearty, find her last two productions, fillies to Jewel Pointer and Ringtrue, respectively, are splendid types of youngsters.
