U.S.A. BORROWINGS

WASHINGTON, April 16

The Secretary of the Treasury (MiHenry Morgenthau, jinn.) announced that the Treasury has been forced to resume the borrowing of money at the rate of 50,000,000 dollars a week. The decision is the result of tax receipts being nearly 500,000,000 dollars below the estimates. Simultaneously the heads of State departments and' bureaux, under orders from Mr Roosevelt, began pressing their subordinates to cut expenditure to the limit.

CANADA’S DEFENCE.

TORONTO, April 16

The Minister for Defence (Mr lan Mackenzie) in an address here said that Canada would fight her own battles in future in the traditional British manner instead of depending on the Monroe doctrine for protection. He said: “Canada proposes to place her faith in her own strength' and in the Empire.”

BRITAIN’S WATER SUPPLY.

RUGBY, April 15

The Minister for Health (Sir Kingsley Wood), after consultation with other Government departments, has appointed a central water advisory committee under the chairmanship of Lord Milne, and comprising persons with knowledge of the problems from the point of view of the various interests • concerned. The committee will advise Government departments on questions relating to the conservation and allocation of water resources. It is expected that the committee will consider in the first place necessary measures for the modernisation of the law dealing with the supply, conservation and use of water, so that the resources of the country may be used to the best advantage.

It is expected that to cover the period of lhe Coronation and the ordinary Whitsuntide recess, Parliament will adjourn on May 7 and reassemble on May 21. Although considerable business has yet to be done. Parliament may be able to rise for the summer vacation on July 30.
