[ba: cable—press assn. —COPYRIGHT.]
LONDON, April 15.
In view of press reports that there had been an outbreak of violence among prisoners at Dartmoor, the Prisons Commission has issued an official statement, that the reports Avere untrue.
It appears from the official statement that on two occasions this month a small number of prisoners made complaints about the food and five prisoners committed. minor breaches of discipline. The cases were reported, and dealt with by the governor of the prison or by the Board of Visitors. The denials of trouble at Dartmoor, however, are discounted by the fact that while regulations were issued some time ago withdrawing arms and batons from the guards, the latter now are all thus armed. Further, the staff on duty to-night has been trebled. It is stated that 300 prisoners had planned another mutiny for Coronation Day.
The trouble is believed to have arisen over the quality and quantity of the food.
