GREY MAIN SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE Mr A. E. Morgan presided over an attendance of the following members at a meeting of the Greymouth Main School Committee this week:—Messrs G. Batty, L. Patterson, M. Sheard, H. Herring, W. Williams and C. H. O’Callaghan (secretary). The headmaster, Mr. J. Graham,, was also present. It was decided to thank the West, Coast Rugby Union for a donation of’ footballs. The headmaster was empowered to purchase two basketballs. It was resolved that the Basketball Association be permitted to lay down another court in the school-ground, and that they have the use of the school court, provided it is not required for the pupils’ use. In reply to Mr. Sheard, who said that a. deputation of Blaketown residents had waited on him in regard to short-staffing of the Blaketown school, the chairman said that he and the secretary had been in touch with the Canterbury Education Board, and he had received advice that Miss I. Sexton would commence duties at the Blaketown School on Monday. The headmaster’s report, as follows, was read and adopted:—Main School —Roll number 318 boys and 273 girls: total 591. Average attendance 299 boys and 257 girls; total 556. Blaketown —Roll number 75 boys and .70 girls; total 145. Average attendance 65 boys and 61 girls; total 126. During the month the attendance of both schools has been affected by the prevailing epidemic. Owing to the increased roll number, Blaketown is entitled to an additional assistant. A commencement has been made with both football and basketball. All members of the staff display a keen interest in both games. Two basketballs are urgently required for the girls’ teams. The Rugby Union has kindly supplied both schools with footballs.
