SOUTHLAND HOSPITAL
MAINTENANCE & CAPITAL COSTS
[PER press association.]
INVERCARGILL, Aprij 15
Increased levies will be made on the ratepavers of the Southland Hospital Board’s district for the current financial year, in terms of the estimates adopted and the rates struck at the Board’s meeting to-day. It was stated, however, that in the past hospital rates in the Southland district had been substantially lower than the average for New Zealand, and the maintenance levy this year had been increased only to last year’s average for the Dominion. >
The capital expenditure levy would he considerably higher than last year s average, which was to be expected in the year of the opening of the new hospital. The estimated maintenance expenditure for the year is £6 1,000. compared with £54,000 last vear. The year closed with a debit balance of £2283, which has to be met this year, and the increase in staff and wages imposes an increased burden on the account. There ( is also some uncertainty in estimating the maintenance expenditure in running the new hospital at Kew and the old hospital in Dee Street, to which the patients and staff of the Lome Infirmary will be transferred shortly. The total levy on the district will he .338 d in the pound, compared with ,252 d in the pound last year. The increased rate is expected to produce £25.716. compared with £22,021 last years. _______________ CREMOLA Custard wins favour by its flavour —always delicious and | nutritious.
