Applications for donations from the Greymouth portion of Lord Nuffield’s gift to the West Coast, were dealt with, to-day, by the Mayor (Mr. W. Meldrum) and Mr. H. Lane (secretary of the Mayor’s Relief of Distress Fund). The total available was £458 9/6, and the amounts allocated to-day totalled £3lO, including the following amounts: Greymouth branch of the Plunket Society, £25; Institute for the Blind, £2O; Inangahua County Council, towards the cost of maternity home, £2O. There were 27 applications, mainly from individuals, and grants were made ranging from £5 upwards. Several applications were referred to the Mayor’s Relief of Distress Fund, it being considered that they did not come within the objects of the Nuffield gift, which was mainly for the assistance of the deaf and dumb, the blind, and cripples.
