BRITAIN’S EXPORTS
NOTABLE INCREASE SHOWN. [BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.] RUGBY, March 15. Commenting on the satisfactory nature of the British trade return for February, “The Times” says: “The most significant method of comparison is to show the figures for every working day. The improvement in exports, including re-export, in February was nearly £300,000 a day compared with January, 1937, and more than £365,000 a day compared with February, 1936. “On the same basis, imports were only £Bo,opo a. day higher than in January, and about £400,000 higher than in the previous February. “It is therefore clear that in spite of the special demand for imports for the defence programme and’the discouragement of exports which some feared might result from the same programme, exports are showing a notable advance.’’ TOBACCO REVENUE. RUGBY. .March 15. The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr Neville Chamberlain), answering a question in the House of Commons, said that the approximate net amount of revenue derived from imported tobacco during 1936 was £77,770,000. U.S.A. AND JAPAN. NEW YORK, March 15. The Washington correspondent of the “New York Times” says the United States Government is expected soon to start exploratory conversations with Japan, with a view to a reciprocal trade agreement. Experts are confident that a suitable basis will be readily found. It is not believed that the progress of the British-American reciprocal trade conversations will be delayed until after the forthcoming Imperial Conference.
