INFANTILE PARALYSIS

OUTBREAK AT HASTINGS. [PEII PRESS ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS. March 15. The notification of three positive cases of infantile paralysis, and also of one suspected case, caused the schools in Hasting and the immediate surrounding districts to be closed as from to-day, until Tuesday. March 30. just after Easter. Of the four cases, two were from Hastings, one was from Havelock North, and one from Whakatu. All four are children not yet of school age. AT PALMERSTON NORTH PALMERSTON N., March 16. Two positive cases of infantile paralysis have been diagnosed, iollowing their admission to the Palmerston North hospital, being the first in this district. Ono is a young woman from Rangiotu, and the other a young girl from Mangawhata. The Medical Superintendent (Dr. J. H. North) states that both are mild cases, hut are positive. No other suspects or cases are under observation in this district. The Rangiotu patient is a Maori girl, aged 20 years, and the Mangawhata is a white child, aged seven years. Both have partial paralysis in one foot. The Bainesse and Rangiotu schools have been closed, pending further instructions from the Health Department. and the patients’ homes have been isolated. CHRISTCHURCH CASE. CHRISTCHURCH, March 16. A further infantile paralysis case, a girl aged seven years, was admitted to hospital from Linwood, to-day.
