The suggestion made in Paeroa recently that the great services, to the Dominion in the early, days of gold mining in the Thames and Coromandel peninsula of the late Mr James Mackay, first Native Commissioner and first Mining Warden, should- be suitably commemorated has been represented to the Prime Minister by Mr J. Thorn, M.P. Mr Savage has replied that any representations made by the Paeroa people in regard to the establishing of a suitable memorial will receive the Government’s very careful attention.
“The position of our industry in values for our products is a matter for congratulation, but the manner in which costs are mounting up, especially taxation, is most alarming,” said the president of the •poverty; Bay Sheep Owners’ Union (Mr C. H. Williams), in his annual report. “No reasonable opportunity is being given to restore the financial damage of the last lean years dr to prepare for the reaction from the present prosperity that must surely come in the near future. In our own defence the only sound policy is one of steady resistance to excessive increases in costs and of steady pressure upon the Government to moderate the demand upon our already over-taxed industry.”
Outstanding increases in the value of footwear manufactured overseas and imported into New Zealand during the month of January are indicated in returns furnished by the New Zealand Footwear Manufacturers’ Association. Although the figures are supplied without comment by the association, it is obvious from the substantial increases that Dominion manufacturers consider, the.position a serious one. During January the total value of leather boots, and shoes imported reached £19,375, an increase of £12,295 on the figure for January, 1936, and £10,658 on that for January, 1935. The importations included 3396 dozen pairs from the United Kingdom, 344 dozen from Australia, and 172 dozen from the -United States. Children’s shoes imported were valued at £2745, and slippers at £1537. The figures for January of last year for children’s shoes and slippers were £9lO and £142, respectively.
