MELBOURNE HOOLIGANS

CABLE TRAM SOUVENIRS [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.J MELBOURNE, March 14. Extraordinary scenes were witnessed when the last cable trams to Port Melbourne and South Melbourne reached their termini at midnight on Saturday. Both lines are now beingclosed in preparation for their conversion to electricity. Thousands of persons gathered at the terminal tramsheds and each car arriving was bombarded with road metal. Six trams had every window smashed and every movable part torn off by souvenir hunters. The police were heavily reinforced, but were unable to quell the disturbance. A serious accident was narrowly averted, as a heavily-laden tram and trailer were proceeding to South Melbourne. An irresponsible person pulled a pin from a coupling, and the trailer bolted for 200 yards before being stopped. At the South Melbourne terminus detonators were exploded under the cars, but no one was. injured. One youth was arrested for stealing a tram door.
