ATHLETICS
AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS [per press association.] AUCKLAND;' March 12. CONFERENCE DISCUSSIONS.
AUCKLAND, March 12,
Tito statement that New Zealand youth was burning itself out by having to compete against senior competitors, was made by Mr. Wily, of the Auckland Centre, at the annual meeting of delegates of the various centres of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association.
The meeting decided to ask the controlling body to permit the holding of New Zealand championships for women and junior athletes. The council is to be asked for the women’s and junior championships to be held in 1937-38, end also to prohibit junior competitors from taking part in senior championship events. Mr. McKierman (Otago) asked the conference to try and have Cameron (discus thrower) and Spillane (hammer thrower) reinstated as amateurs. Mr. McCormick said that it was hopeless for anyone who had been a professional to expect to compete at the Empire Games. However, the council would see what could be done.
