GOLF CADDIES

PROPOSED BAN REJECTED

[BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, March 11.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews has rejected the proposed ban on the employment of private caddies in major tournaments, and the payment of big fees. The proposal was made by the Professional Golfer’s Association - “because ■ of the many abuses of the present system.” ■

The Association suggested that caddies should be allocated by lot, with a fee of 10/- daily. The Royal and Ancient decided that the allocation of caddies was the business of the club at which the championship was played.

The proposed ban aroused a storm of protest. A. Padgham and T. H. Cotton declared that if they were deprived of personal caddies they would either stay away from tournaments or carry a light bag of clubs themselves. '

Meanwhile the Professional Golfers’ Association is considering other means to prevent golfers being victimised by unscrupulous caddies demanding exorbitant fees.”
