Whoilrer or not there was excessive drinking by the" Public Work's employees al Kaikoura, he was not able personally to say, said Mr. T. E. Maunscll, S.M.. chairman of the Wairan Licensing Committee, when interviewed at. Nelson this afternoon by telephone regarding the remarks of (ho Minister of Public Works (Hon. R. Semple) following :■ request, made by the Wairnu Licensing Committee, of which Nir. Maunsell is chairman, for a. report from the police at Kaikoura.
Mr. Maunsell said that information had been given him, in a private conversation. It might well prove to be unfounded. Nevertheless, a rumour ( xisfc<l7 1 and ho wished to know whether it. was true pr not. He was not concerned with whether there was drinking'or otherwise at Public Works camps. All he wished to know was whether or not licensees at. Kaikoura wore conforming to the law. That was Iho object in asking for a report from the police..
