HOKITIKA NOTES

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.J

HOKITIKA, March 12.

Several narrow escapes from serious accidents have occurred recently in Hokitika. The most serious was that of Mr J. Gardener, of Hampden Street, who was riding a bicycle which came into collision with the butcher’s van of Mr T. Cumming at the opening leading from the railway yard to Fitzherbert Street. Mr Gardener received a fractured' arm and was removed to the Westland Hospital. A lad about six was knocked off his bicycle by a. car, but beyond a shaking was not injured. Yesterday a man, about 80 years of age, was knocked off his bicycle. He also fortunately escaped injury. Speeding along Stafford Street, where there are obscured corners, is becoming a serious matter, and a first-class crash is predicted by those living along this route. The dangei’ is not caused by local motorists but by visitors in their new cars. In many cases no horn is sounded on aproaching the corners.

Mr T. Donovan, who served his cadetship, and has been employed' at the Kanieri Forks by Kanieri Electric Limited, was farewelled last evening at his place of residence. A happy evening was spent, and the departing guest was presented with a clock. Mr Donovan, who is the son of Mr James Donovan, of Okarito, has received an appointment with the Taumarunui Power Board, and leaves on Monday next.

The Hokitika. River is slowly but surely changing its course to the north bank Already there is a steady flow of water on the north side, where for some years there was none.
