BATHERS IN DANGER

CANTERBURY RESCUES. [PEB PBESB ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, March 1. Six persons were rescued at Taylor’s Mistake yesterday, four of them by members of sprf life-saving clubs who were at Taylor’s Mistake to compete in the annual Kesteven Cup day events.

The senior resuscitation championship was being held when signals were noticed by some members of the Sumner Club. A team with S. Gardiner in the belt went to the assistance of a girl who was in serious difficulties, and who was being kept afloat by S. Rich, of the North Beach Club. e She was brought ashore, and at the same time it was noticed that three other swimmers, another girl and two men were in trouble. Gardiner returned with the belt and brought ashore the other girl and one of the men, who also had been supported by various members of the visiting clubs. Another line with A. T. Dalton, New Zealand champion beltman, in the belt, was also run out, and the other man was brought ashore. The first girl to be brought out was in a state of collapse through exhaustion and shock, and resuscitation had to be applied to one of the men.. At the time of these rescues the part of the beach where they occurred was particularly* dangeorus. There was an ebb tide and, in addition, the evident converging of two currents was causing a strong undertow, which /troubled even the strongest swimmers.

Later in the afternon, when the competitions were nearly finished, two more persons were rescued. One man was assisted by two other bathers to reach the shore, and a team went out with a line to give assistance to two other men who could not reach shallow water because of the set.
