COMPETITION FOR CAR. \ [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. February 25 The trial of IL F. Pobar, Bertram Egley, and 11. N. Marshall on five charges of false pretences in the conduct of a competition with a motorcar as the prize, was continued today, when the last of 27 witnesses for the prosecution were heard. After the Crown's ease had closed, Pobar, conducting his own defence, said he did not intend to give evidence. Counsel, outlining the case tor Egley, said Egley had known the seals of the prize car were broken because National Motors had failed to provide a demonstration car, but he was assured that a new car would be provided as the prize. He sold tickets in the South Island while Pobar sold them in the North Island, In a period of five or six weeks he paid £lOO in--1 to an overdraft account, but on learning that. Pobar had paid nothing into rafti . d to soil in Iff' tickets, taking no further pari in the
business, except as a go-between between Marshall and Pobar. Egley was in the witness-box when the Court adjourned until to-morrow. APPEAL FROM CONVICTION. INVERCARGILL, February 25. In the Supreme Court to-day, before Mr Justice Kennedy, Harold Calvert appealed from his conviction by the Stipendiary Magistrate at Invercargill, Calvert, having been fined £2OO on a charge brought by John Albert Colin MacKenzie, of offering shares for subscription. The appellant (Calvert) was represented by Mr P. B. Cook, K.C. (Wellington), and Mr G. V. Murdoch (Dunedin). Mr H. J. Mac Alister appeared for the respondent (MacKenzie). Counsel for the appellant held that the fact that Calvert called on eight ’ persons in different towns, with whom ' he had done business before, did not “ constitute a house-to-house canvass. ■''The hearing was adjourned till to- ‘ | morrow.
