£11,000 DEBUTANTE PARTY
ROOM AS RACECOURSE. NEW YORK, December 30. One of the most elaborate and costly debutante parties on record, estimated to have cost £ll,OOO, was held at Philadelphia last night for the comingout of Miss Joan Peabody. She is a step great-granddaughter of the late Mi Joseph Widener, the American racehorse owner, who started life as a butcher’s boy and built up a huge fortune during the American Civil War. The party was held in the large mansion of Miss Peabody’s mother, Mrs. Peter Widener, and more than 1,500 guests were present. The orchestia cf 75 musicians hired for £2,000 played until 6 a.m. A hundred cases of champagne wei e provided and £3,000 worth of flowers and decorations. At 4 a.m. a hot breakfast was served in a special room transformed to represent Hialeah Park Racecourse, Florida, which was founded by Mr. Widener. A arge dummy horse stood in the middle of the room with a negro, dressed in the Widener racing colours, holding his head.
