KUMARA NOTES

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] The Kumara sawmillers’ annual picnic was held on the racecourse on Saturday. The day was beautifully fine, and the attendance large. The main attraction this year was the competition for the Hamer Shield and Peever Banner, previously run by the Sports Club. The Shield was won by the State School, with 44 points; the-Convent School,'which held it last year, gaining 39 points. The Banner for the relay events, was also won by the State School. For the Shield, the State School secured seven firsts, six seconds, and five third placings, and the the Convent, six first, seven second and seven third placings. The various events were evenly contested, and resulted in close finishes. Numerous other events for the smaller children were also run. The result of the various adult events were: — Mixed Couple Saw. —J. Keating and Miss M. McGrath 1'; J. Scott and Mrs. Rochford 2. Sweepstake Chop.—J. Neame 1, J. Scott 2. Single Ladies’ Race. —A. Hamer 1, J. Pamment 2, M. Steele 3. Girls’ race for Umbrella. —E. Mayne I, S. O’Regan 2, M. McEnaney 3. Bicycle Race for Boys.—J. McLoughlin 1, J. McKenzie 2, J. Steele 3. Bicycle race for Girls. —M. Steele 1, J. Pamment 2, J. Gilbert 3. Trophies were donated by Rev. Father Healey, Messrs Griffen and Smith, Ashby Bergh and Co., and Mr. H. Melville.

The committee were energetic, and praise is due to them. What might have resulted in a serious conflagration, happened last, evening at about 8.30 o'clock on the footpath. Seddon Street, immediately in front of May's petrol pump, which is installed next to the shop attached to the bakehouse. Prior to the happening, benzine had been taken from the pump to supply a car, resulting in some of the fluid being spilled on the ground, when a boy threw down a lighted match. In an instant, flames were shooting high in the air, spreading all round the pump. Luckily a number of people were about, and with the assistance of a. few buckets of water, the flames were extinguished before any serious’damage was done. —
