WESTLAND COUNTY ELECTION
MR P. J. McLean elected. The vacancy caused on the Westland County Council (Southern Riding) by the death of Mr W. J. Jeffries, was filled on Saturday, when in a bye-election, Mr P. J. McLean, of Greyjnouth, was elected by a. large majority over his two opponents, Mr W. Searle (Hari Hari) and Mr A. R. Elcock (Hokitika). Unusually keen interest was taken in the by-election throughout the Riding, as was evidenced by the fact that few votes were not cast. Mr McLean, returning thanks for his election, said: he had always been a. keen advocate in the welfare of the district, and he would continue to work in the district’s interests. His predecessor, Mr Jeffries, said Mr McLean, had been a valuable member of the Council, and his aim had always been that the County should get full value for all moneys spent. Mr McLean said that he would do his best to maintain the record of the deceased member for the Southern Riding, in the service of the ratepayers.
