REEFTON NOTES
[OUB OWN COBRESPONDENT.] REEFTON, February 20. The funeral of the late Mrs. Grace Hubbard moved from the Church of the Sacred Heart, Reefton on Friday morning. There was a large attendance. Rev. Father Butler conducted the service at the Church and at the graveside. In connection with the request of a number of business people, who presented a petition to the Inangah.ua County Council, and waited on a meeting of the Council, asking that the decision of the Council in fixing the half holiday as Saturday be altered, and that Wednesday be appointed the statutory half day in Reefton. The Deputy County Chairman is in receipt of the following letter from the Assistant Secretary Department of Labour:—l have to acknowledge your letter of the 9th inst. and note the position in which the Council is placed in regard to the statutory closing day. I. would, however, point out that the Council has no power to reconsider : i regard to the statutor) .. .iday, and as the
Chairman has notified the Minister of the day decided upon by the Council, the Minister is obliged by Section 15 of the Shops and Offices Act to appoint by notice in the Gazette./ Saturday as the closing day in the Inangahua County. As already pointed out the Minister has no option in the matter. I may mention that the Minister has expressed his intention of introducing this year the Shops and Offices Act, in regard to the closing hours of the shops, and it is possible that suggestions will be made to him for the observance of a universal halfholiday.
