WELDED BRITISH WARSHIPS

SAVING IN WEIGHT. LONDON, December 31. According to the annual review published by the "Shipbuilding and Shipping Record.’’ electric arc welding is being extensively used in the construction of the 22,000 ton aircraft-carrier

Ark Royal, now being built at Birkenhead. Welding is also to be used to a greater extent than previously in the building of the two battleships King George V. and Prince of Wales, which are to be laid down, early next month. Sir Alexander Gibldhe welding expert, has stated that our new destroyers and cruisers have a large proportion of their structure welded. Electric welding has made a great advance in recent years owing to the imperative necessity for saving weight in warships to conform to treaty restrictions.
