CAR & LORRY COLLIDE

THREE PEOPLE KILLED

TRAGEDY NEAR MASTERTON

[PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.]

MASTERTON, February 15. A husband and wife were killed, and two other persons were injured, one gravely and the other seriously, as the result of a motor accident, which occurred this evening, on the Main North Road, about 12 miles from Masterton. The victims were:— Killed: Leslie William Sharman, cycle dealer, of Masterton, and. Margaret Sharman. Injured: Charles He'rbert Howes, carpenter, of Masterton; condition very grave. B. Waters, of Masterton, extensive injuries; Condition fairly serious. The two injured men were taken to the hospital. The accident occurred on a bend on the road, the car, which was beingdriven by Leslie Sharman, colliding with a transport lorry, heavily laden with fruit, and driven by Raymond Cedric Bushby, fruit merchant, of Hastings. Neither Bushby nor his companion was injured. The car left. Masterton about 4.30 p.m. on the way to Palmerston' North, Mr. and Mrs. Sharman occupying the front seat. While there was no eye witness, it appears that the car, a heavy sedan, struck the lorry on the side, just past the cab. It tore away much of the woodwork of the 16rry side, and scattered apples over a wide area. The full force of the impact was felt on the driver’s side of the car, which was reduced to a mangled mass.

Sharman was killed outright, and his wife lived only for a few minutes. The. lorry was able to proceed under its own power, but the car was damaged beyond repair. The Sharmans are survived by their only child, a girl of about eight years. Sharman had been in Masterton about 12 years, and took a prominent part in sport and Foresters’ Lodge affairs. LATER. Howes died in the hospital late tonight.
