CONSERVATIVES RETAIN SEAT

LONDON, November 26. The Preston by-election caused by the appointment of Mr. W. M. Kirkpatrick as a representative on the Exports Credits Department in China, resulted: — Captain E. C. Cobb (Conservative) -.. •• F. G. Bowles (Labour) .. 30,970 Miss F. White (Independent) 3,221 Majority for Cobb, 1605. Miss White supported spinsters’ pensions. At the 1935 elections the poll for the two seats in the Preston constituency resulted: —A. C. Moreing (C.) 37,219, W. M. Kirkpatrick (C.) 36,797, Dr. R. A. Lyster (Lab.) 32,225, R.' L. Reiss (Lab.), 31,827. SIR W. JOWETT (Recd. November 27 2 a.m.) LONDON, November 26. The “News-Chronicle” reports that the National Labour executive is readmitting Sir W. Jowett, who was expelled in 1932 for supporting Mr. MacDonald.
PUBLIC ORDER BILL [BBITISH OFFICIAL WIBELESS.] RUGBY, November 26. The Commons proceeded to further consideration of the Bill prohibiting the wearing of uniforms in connection with political objects, and the maintenance by private persons of associations of a military character, and making provision for the preservation of order on the occasion of processions and meetings in public places.
