Butler, chairman of the Committee of Enquiry into the taxi and town-carrying business, at the conclusion of the sit-' ting at Hastings to-day. I Mr. Butler said that the taking of i outside evidence was concluded, Hastings being the last of the outside dis- | tricts where hearings had to be taken. He expressed the appreciation of him-. self and his colleagues of the manner in which owners and employees had , co-operated in placing the facts about the industry before the committee. | “On our return to Wellington, after our report has been prepared, it will be forwarded to the Minister for Transport, and thence to the Government,” he said. The manager of Cross Taxis said that his owner-drivers worked an average of S 3 hours a week, when he gave evidence before the committee at Napier. He asked for the regulation of fares and increases for certain work, such as weddings. A sergeant of police said that there was no speeding by taxis, and no taxi driver had been responsible for an accident during the last two years. In each of eight accidents concerning taxis in that time, the other party had been to blame. The chairman (Mr. Butler): I saw speeding by taxis in the town last night.
