HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, November 14. The monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Perry), Crs. H. T. Parry, E. L. Park, H. L. Michel, G. Heinz, T. W. Duff. Members of the committee of the Westland Rugby Sub-Union waited on the Council in connection with the procuring of a mower for use on Cass Square. Mr. J. Stafford expressed satisfaction with the horse mower which was tried out on the Square recently. Mr. Heenan (secretary) said the Union would probably find £2O towards the cost of the mower. The Mayor said that if the Union would find £2O the Council would procure the mower. Mr. Heenan said he could give that assurance. The Union had spent £3l on lighting the Square and the light was there for everybody. Mr. Stafford concurred with Mr. Heenan in the matter of providing £2O. It was decided to procure the mower. The Treasurer reported receipts £696/2/9; payments £1770/7/3. Accounts aggregating £1055/18/4 were passed for payment.
The Abattoir Manager’s report showed, animals slaughtered during the month: 23 cows, 31 heifers, 57 bullocks, 208 sheep, 28 pigs, 2 calves; condemned, 1 cow. Fees received £6l 13/- as against £73/7/6 for the same period last year. The foreman’s report dealing with general work was read and approved. The committee appointed reported on the appointment of Miss Violet A, Ross as typiste in place of Miss Andrews, resigned. The tenders for the reticulation contract were submitted and approved. Cr. Parry reported on the pumping scheme, stating that some difficulty had been experienced with the. motor but guaranteed that this would be rectified and that the town would not be without water again.
Cr. Park, for Cr. Thompson moved that in accordance with a recommendation made in a report by the District Railways engineer, the railway embankment along Gibson Quay be raised to assist in keeping out flood water. After discussion it was decided to defer the motion till next meeting in order that full investigation might be made as to cost etc.
The following correspondence was dealt with:— From A. R. Elcock (for Mrs. W. Jackson), application for consent to plan of sub. division of Sections 1421/ 1425, Hokitika.— Approved. Mayor to be authorised to sign. From A. E. Hackel and L. R. Hackel application for consent of plan of sub. division of Sections 1317/1321 and Sections 1311/13, Hokitika.—Approved. From Bassett and Paterson, application for permission to instal a second, inside petrol pump at garage (model “Erie” electric petrol pump). —Granted on usual terms. From secretary, Employment Division, Department of Labour, advising particulars of award rates of pay for Scheme 5. From Hon. Secretary, Southern Cricket Sub. Association, asking that some improvements be made to Cass Square for the forthcoming cricket season—Mr. Harper was present on
behalf of the Club and said cricket has waned in Hokitika owing to the want of suitable playing grounds. It would take some fime to get the ground on the cricket reserve in order; the Square would do in the meantime. —The matter was referred to the Reserves Committee to prepare an area and confer with the Club. From Greymouth Motors, Ltd., application for permission to instal two kerb-side petrol pumps at the frontage of Mackley’s Garage, Hampden Street. —Granted on usual conditions. From Mrs W. Jackson, asking that adequate drainage be provided at her sections in North Revell Street to allow storm and flood water to escape. —Council to put in pipes. From the Secretary of the Canterbury Progress League (Westland Committee), asking whether the Council could arrange that work of a permanent nature be carried out in the Borough so that it may appear attractive to visitors and the public generally, and also asking that a special effort be made to clean up the town by improving the streets, footpaths and lighting.—Being attended to. From the Canterbury Automobile Association, asking that speed signs be erected on the main highway at each of the borough boundaries.— Held over. From Mr B. Gaines, application to rent portion of right-of-way adjoining the Bristol, Revell Street, for dart game during the Christmas season.— Left to Town Clerk to arrange. From Mrs E. Howat, application lor domestic water service connection to section 1021, Hampden Street.— G r ciutod From Clerk of Awards, Wellington, notification of industrial dispute between the New Zealand Federation of Local Bodies’ Labourers, etc., and all Boroughs, Counties and Electric Power Boards in the Dominion. Mayor and Town Clerk have power to appoint a representative. From the Secretary of the Lyttelton Harbour Board regarding publicity fund and West Coast publicity drive. From the Trustees of W. J. Butlei bequest, asking authority to convert £350 of New Zealand 41 per cent, stock maturing on 15/1/1940 into3i per cent, stock maturing 1953-.17 — Authority given as requested. From the District Highways Council advising that the Main Highways Board will visit Hokitika on November 24, and asking whether the Council wishes to meet the Board and also what matters are Hkely to be brought up for discussion. From the Secretary of the Hokitika Harbour Board, detailing action being ’ taken in regard to sea erosion at the ; north training wall.—Agreed to sup- ! port the application made, on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. 1 Duff.
From J. J. P. Hagar, application for consent to plan of sub-division of sections 1293 and 1294, Hampden Street, Hokitika.—Consented to. From the New Zealand Refrigerating Co., Christchurch, advising that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika during the month of October, 1936, viz.: 153 sheep, 19 lambs. From the Secretary of the Hokitika Tennis Club, asking the Council to instal one chain of 4-inch drain pipes along the club’s frontage in Sewell
Street, to connect to borough 9-inch drain to carry waste water from pavilion.—Request agreed to, the cost to be borne by the club.
From No. 12 District Highways Council, notifying that Main Highways through the Borough of Hokitika, and also that portion of the Arthurstown Detour Highway within the Borough, becomes a State highway from November 1, 1936, and asking whether the Council desires to continue the existing arrangement for maintenance of the highways, or alternately, for the State to take over the highways and be responsible for the maintenance, including the shoulders of the tar-sealed portion. Also thanking the Council for the high standard of maintenance during past years.—The Mayor said the Council would be wise to accept the offer of the Board, and he moved in that direction. Seconded by Cr. Michel and carried.
From the Transport Department, Wellington, asking for information in regard to taxi-cab licenses and towncarrier licenses.
From W. H. Bone, stating that he is considering purchasing section 1502, Rolleston Street, and asking to what extent the Council would assist in providing road access and a water supply.—Agreed to assist in forming the road and laying pipes.. From the Secretary of the Brunner Picnic Committee, asking for the use of Cass Square for the purpose of the annual picnic on Saturday, February 6, 1937.—Granted. From the Secretary of the J. O’Brien Presentation Committee, advising that a social and presentation should be tendered to Mr J. O’Brien, and asking whether the Council would appoint two representatives to be present at the meeting to decide the form of presentation, and also to represent the Council at the official function. —Crs. Michel and Thompson were appointed to represent the Council at the meeting.
